Tell AI what’s different.
A new paper came out this week that explains just how prompting (in-context learning) and neuron activations can both steer AI towards doing what we want.
The paper goes into significant depth about the inner workings of AI models but teaches a supremely valuable point: if you want AI to perform to the greatest capacity, tell it what’s different. Even small nudges can dramatically change the output.
Here’s a conceptual example. Suppose AI was a pizzeria. The chef is awesome at pizza but tends to make plain cheese pizzas. Ask him for a pizza, he’ll make you the best cheese pizza slice you’ve ever had. But ask for a pepperoni pizza and it takes a lot of convincing – and sometimes you still get a plain cheese pizza.
Now, suppose you whispered in his ear frequently a single word: pepperoni. Assuming he was okay with you invading his personal space like that constantly, what would happen? Even without asking, he might start to default to making pepperoni pizzas.
What’s critical to understand here is that you don’t have to explain to him what a pizza is. You don’t need to belabor what dough is, or cheese, or sauce. You simply point out what’s DIFFERENT about what you want versus what his defaults are – you want pepperoni pizza.
As we work with AI models, and ESPECIALLY as you build agents that need efficient prompts to scale cost effectively, keep this core principle in mind. Your prompts and system instructions don’t need to explain to the model what it already knows. You do have to explain how your prompt DIFFERS from what it already knows.
