Agentic browsers are stupid.
Following on a discussion thread from Mike Kaput, I pointed out why these things feel so unnecessary – and to be clear, we’re talking abut browsers like Perplexity Comet, ChatGPT Atlas, etc.
What is the purpose of an agent (the agent in agentic browser)?
Agents go off and do things without you.
A real estate agent does a lot of the heavy lifting for you on the buying or selling of a home.
A travel agent does a lot of the heavy lifting for you on booking your travels, especially complex travel.
When you hire agents, you expect them to be skilled and to operate mostly independently. You tell them what you want – a house with X square footage and yard, a vacation that goes to these places with this budget, and they go and do it.
Agentic AI that has access to a browser of its own is amazing. It can go and do things without you. You’ve experienced this, with tools like Deep Research that goes and browses a bunch of websites and comes back with solid reports.
But agentic AI that’s using MY browser?
That’s like having a travel agent in your cabin with you on your cruise. I don’t really want them there.
That’s like having a real estate agent living in your house 24×7. Yeah, if I’m selling, I want them by the house occasionally, or doing open house tours or whatever, but I don’t want them there during dinner.
That’s why these browsers feel so clunky and unnecessary. Agentic AI should be about REDUCING our work, REDUCING our interruptions, REDUCING the time we spend doing stuff, not ADDING more distractions and diversions. And certainly not vacuuming up all the data we browse (including private data that web crawlers can’t get to) or the data of other people who haven’t consented to their data being eaten up by AI.
They benefit the tech companies far more than they benefit the user, and that’s part of why they feel so off.
