The tech is outpacing us.
I’ve been on the road now for a while this fall, watching, listening, observing. At a couple of recent conferences I was speaking at, I shoulder surfed sitting next to attendees to see how they were using AI.
It was like going back in time to 2024. Turn by turn, chat by chat, watching people talk to some of the smartest agentic models cranked up to maximum settings to write an email. (my jaw dropped watching someone prompt Claude Opus 5.5 on Max effort to make a marketing email)
Today, consumers and end users have a bounty of agentic choices like Muse, Grok Bot, OpenAI Dots, and yesterday’s newest entrant, Claude Duet, to have AI agents manage things more proactively. I’ve seen those at work and listened to consumers using them (often loudly, on speakerphone on their phones at the airport), and they get the idea of just delegating entire tasks, like itineraries, purchases, even running their small businesses from voice dictation to an agent.
And these agents are using the same high intelligence models – Muse uses Muse Wonder Full, Grok Bot uses Grok 4.7, OpenAI Dots uses Sol 6.1 by default (IIRC), and Claude Duet uses Opus.
Our customers, our audiences are using level 4 technology and we are still using it at level 1. All this year, I’ve been urging companies from every stage and platform to at least get your teams up to level 3. Level 3 is the floor of where you should be in AI enablement right now. Level 4 is hopefully in the labs.
“But compliance! IT! Regulated industry!” etc. Yes, I get it. Business, especially some businesses, are hamstrung by internal processes and external requirements. You can’t shrug those off, because that’s willful negligence. But you do have to understand that a small and fast-growing part of your customer base is well, far ahead of you and using machines to interact with you. This asymmetry is only going to get worse because tech companies know that consumers have no approval process to deploy new tech other than tapping “Install”.
At a bare minimum, get a skunkworks set up internally to be testing how the latest tools interact with your business. Air gap it, DMZ it, do whatever you have to do to meet your required obligations for safety, privacy, and security, but get it going sooner rather than later, because by the time you claw your way up to level 3, there’s a good chance your audience will have level 5 systems and your ability to influence them will be badly diminished.
