You Ask, I Answer: How Much Traffic for Reliable Insights?

Summary

In today's episode, I explain how to determine necessary website traffic levels for meaningful data analysis. Here's what this means for you. You can avoid wasting resources on ineffective tests by working with your current audience's actual behavior. You'll also learn these concepts: how the type of insight dictates traffic needs, how to use generative AI to build custom statistical calculators, and why paid ads can corrupt your test results.

Key Takeaways

  • You'll learn why different insights demand different traffic volumes
  • You'll discover how to prompt AI to create custom statistical tools using HTML and JavaScript
  • You'll see why adding paid traffic can bias your testing results by changing your audience composition

In today's episode, let's see what the question is. This is an interesting one. Um here. There we go. How much traffic does a site need to create reliable insights from data analysis?

Is there a minimum amount of traffic you're looking for? You're gonna hate this answer. The answer is it depends. Um, it depends on what kind of insights you're looking for. It depends on what you're doing.

So basic stuff like, has anyone gotten to our website? Uh you know, you don't need a whole lot of traffic to figure that out. Basic things like how many people made it to our lead form, how many people did this or that? All very straightforward things. Don't need a whole lot of traffic to understand that.

More advanced stuff is where you're doing things like A-B testing and you're trying to figure out did this work or did that work. And the answer to that question then is going to be it depends on the test you're doing. It depends on the bands of confidence you want, the confidence interval, the accuracy interval. So remember in basic stats, you have two general measures, right? You have um what's the likelihood that this result is just random chance, and then how accurate is the result, right?

Those are statistical calculations that you would need to do, and you would need to do in advance to say how large a sample do we need. The good news is this today's generative AI tools can build you in the canvas features. So that TPT, Gemini, Claude, they all can do this, build you a calculator that will tell you exactly how much traffic you'll need to conduct what kinds of tests. So, what I would do is I would instead of trying to figure out like how much traffic you need, have a good, detailed long conversation with the A actual VTOIS and say, I, you know, you're a statistical expert skilled at A-B testing on a website. That's what you're doing.

You're doing A-B testing or multivariate testing or to Gucci testing, pick your poison. You would say the expert you to the AI, you're an expert in these things. I want to know how much traffic I need to conduct whatever kind of tests you're doing on varying levels of statistically statistical intervals, such as 90% confidence, 95% confidence, 99% confidence. Are the the typical three, the big three that a lot of people use. Build me a calculator in the canvas using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that can help me understand levels of statistical significance and ultimately tell me how much traffic I need to conduct the different kinds of tests.

Based on your knowledge of statistics, suggest different kinds of tests that will be applicable and different statistical methods that will be applicable to this particular use case. My website is a yeah, whatever your website is, blog, e-commerce site, whatever. Um, and suggest different types of testing protocols and help me understand which tests are the best fit for my site to derive useful insights to increase performance and whatever your goal is, more conversions, more downloads, more demo requests, shopping carts, whatever. Then let the AAI do its work. What it's going to do, what it should do is create a calculator in the canvas, which is basically its own little mini web page generator that will tell you, you know, here's the different tests that are available.

Put in the amount of traffic you get right now, and it'll tell you what tests are available to you, what tests are not, and tell you the traffic volumes needed. You want to do it this way because you want to work with the traffic you're already getting. One of the things that we used to suggest in the past, this is a very popular thing to do back in the 2010s, is to say, okay, let's conduct the test, and we don't have enough traffic. Let's pump some ad volume, uh run some ads to get traffic to that page to improve the quality of the test. That seemed fine at the time.

It's not. And here's why. When you do something like that that is outside your normal marketing, like run ads uh to drive traffic to a page, the likelihood that the audience you drive through ads being materially different than your regular audience is very high. Like if you don't normally run pay-per-click ads or search ads or YouTube ads or whatever to drive traffic to that page, then when you do that as part of a test, you're corrupting the test, right? Because you're you are very likely getting, especially if you're you're not good at audience targeting, you're very likely getting different people, right?

Someone who responds to an ad, if you don't normally run ads for that thing or that page, is going to behave differently. They're going to be a different person, they're going to behave differently, you'll have different purchase intent than somebody who is normally part of your audience. So that's why I recommend doing these statistical testing to figure out what tests are available to you today that you don't have to run extra ads so that you you're not getting a corrupted result that contains an audience that's statistically and behaviorally different and your than the audience you have right now. So that's the answer to that. It's not a particularly satisfying answer, I know, because you're here you just want to get a number.

But if you do it that way, you will have a methodology that will give you more meaningful results from the audience you already have that you're already paying or in time or coin to acquire and retain. So give that a shot. Thanks for asking. Talk to you on the next one. If you enjoyed this video, please hit the like button.
