AI is more than ChatGPT.
Earlier, someone asked how I felt about the ethics of AI model makers. That’s a much bigger question than you think, because there are literally tens of thousands of model makers and hundreds of thousands of model tuners out there.
You know the big names – Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, etc. but these are just a drop in the bucket of AI model companies.
Especially in the West, we have a willful blindness to the AI being developed in different regions of the world, often with different ethics and different capabilities. This is something I noted at every conference back in 2025 – there is more to tech and the world than Silicon Valley.
A few AI model makers worth noting:
- Cohere: Canada’s pre-eminent model maker
- Mistral: The EU’s top LLM maker, based in France. Has the strongest IP protections thanks to the EU AI Act.
- Leilapi: Makes the Vulavula model for dozens of sub-Saharan languages
- SEAlion: Makes local models specializing in southeast Asian languages like Tamil
- Fujitsu: Japan’s top model maker, makes highly CPU efficient models
- LG: yes, the appliance maker, has a state of the art (SOTA) model, K-EXAONE and the EXAONE family
- Alibaba: the Chinese ecommerce giant that makes the market leading Qwen models, highly efficient and runs on tons of devices
- Deepseek: founded by a Chinese quant analysis expert, it’s got the first self-learning math model and high quality models
- Moonshot: Chinese maker of the SOTA open model, Kimi K2.5
AI is a global phenomenon, and that’s a good thing. Say OpenAI crashes and burns. There are over 2 million different models on Hugging Face (an open model hosting site). Even if all of Silicon Valley evaporated tomorrow, AI would still be quite plentiful and highly capable.
