How to Edit with AI Without Losing Your Voice Using Smallest Effective Edits

“Show the smallest effective edits.”

In the new Trust Insights AI for Writers course, one of the precepts of AI editing is that you have to tell AI how much to edit.

If you say, “Edit this document” or “Revise this document”, AI goes hog-wild, drinks a few Gregorios (Hemingway’s actual favorite drink, the mojito is a forgery done by marketers), and completely rewrites your work. While fast, that also tends to mangle your work, making it unrecognizable except as an AI output.

If you say, “Audit this content and provide a list of the smallest effective edits”, you’ll get back VERY different results. First, it won’t rewrite anything. Second, by giving it a scope of operations, you direct it to do as little work as possible.

This is a huge deal when you’re doing things like ingesting voice transcripts to AI. AI will over-eagerly clean up the transcript so much that you may as well just have had AI write the thing to begin with, it’ll be so unrecognizable. You’ll lose all the flavor of your original text.

Here’s a simple side by side example. I took the first 10 minutes of a new mini-course I’m building for Trust Insights and told one version to edit for clarity and speech disfluencies. The second, I told it to audit the smallest effective edits, then produce the transcript with the smallest effective edits.

The difference, at least to me, is huge. The second transcript is still 100% me, and still has things like my insanely long run-on sentences. The first transcript is smoothed down, with some loss of information.

Now, I have no love of AI detectors, as I’ve said many times before. But passing these two versions through one of the popular platforms, starting with the exact same transcript, tells you how much AI rewrites when you don’t apply a heavy constraint. The first version clocks at 50/50 human/AI, and the second version comes in at 93% human – FAR fewer changes made.

As you work with AI, particularly if you are using to edit human-led works, be sure to restrict how much it’s allowed to do.
