Why GEO Is Reverting to SEO: The Agentic AI Shift You Can’t Ignore

This one’s for Wil Reynolds.

For a couple of years now, GEO/AEO/AI/EIEIO folks have been focused – correctly – on getting mentions into model training data. How do we achieve presence in the core memory? And we’ve all developed some pretty good strategies for that; I cover a bunch of them in the paid Trust Insights GEO 101/201 courses I teach.

But two things have been bothering me about this, as shown by results from folks like Wil, Lily Ray, Garrett Sussman, and many, many others. First, look at the training date cutoffs for Google’s models. Across the board, built-in knowledge hasn’t updated since January 2025. Literally nothing you have done since January 2025 has made it into Google Gemini Flash, the model that powers Google AI Mode and AI overviews.

If you look at things like hallucination rates over on Artificial Analysis, Flash 3.7 (Google’s newest model) hallucinates MORE than 3.5 and 3.6. That’s wild – it means the model has LESS reliable knowledge.

Over on Reddit, folks in /LocalLlama have noted that Qwen3.8 27B also has significantly increased forgetting and lack of knowledge. Niche trivia that previous models knew, the current model doesn’t know – it either spawns a refusal or a hallucination.

What’s happening? In a word, engines. What model makers are realizing is that cramming a model full of knowledge is an exercise in futility; by the time a model is done baking (6-18 months) everything is stale. Alongside, AI has moved decisively to agentic use cases for everything – Claude Cowork, ChatGPT Work, etc. all prove that people want machines to do stuff for them.

So model makers are dropping knowledge in favor of functionality, with the working assumption that the models will use tools to get the necessary knowledge as they work. Models are engines now, not libraries. When you look at today’s top benchmarks like GDPval, Harvey Lab, etc. they all have tool calling as part of the evaluation.

And guess what one of the core tool calls is? Yep. Web search.

Web search is the core of how models now get knowledge within a harness (Claude Cowork, Microsoft Copilot, etc.)

When you hear SEO/GEO folks talk about “AI citations” all that means is that your URL showed up in an AI search.

What does this mean for GEO? In a nutshell, reversion to SEO. Yes, there are new aspects such as what a harness sees and judges relevant when search results come back – that’s more important than ever (good old technical SEO and quality content). But as we pivot more and more towards agentic AI, getting placed in a model’s knowledge becomes less and less important.

And if you fired your SEO firm/team? Expect another zero before the decimal on the bill when you have to rehire them back.
