“No problem, here’s how you build it.” – Reginald Barclay to the Enterprise computer
There’s a fantastic, short scene in Star Trek TNG’s episode “The Nth Degree” in which Lt. Barclay, enhanced by aliens, asks the Enterprise computer to build a neural scanning interface and the computer responds, “There is no such device on file.” He snaps back, “No problem, here’s how you build it.”
That scene lives rent-free in my head every time I have a problem and I’m working with generative AI. It’s what makes genAI so powerful – if we can say it, we can bring it into existence. For example, I’m working on a major document update right now, and I need a tool that can read PDFs and accurately transcribe the charts and graphs inline. The existing tools on the market like MarkItDown and pdftotext don’t do this – they convert the text only.
With powerful, fast, local models like IBM Docling or Qwen3.x, vision language models (VLMs) are capable of looking at an image and writing up what they see. But handing every page of a PDF to a VLM is wasteful – you’re burning a lot of tokens on text-only pages for transcribing things that can literally be copied and pasted.
So what do we do? We ask our AI coding tool of choice to bring it to life. Following The 5P Framework by Trust Insights™, I tell it why I’m asking, who it’s for, what I want it to do, which other CLIs to use so it’s not reinventing the wheel, and what the definition of done is (which includes efficiency), and off it goes.
Once it’s done, I have a new piece of software that solves a very specific problem I have, and with that software, I can reuse it over and over again for similar problems down the road. Sometimes that software uses AI; oftentimes, it does not.
Like the genies of legend, as long as we are thoughtful and careful what we ask for and have the right vocabulary for it, generative AI can give it to us.
