Claude Haiku is the single biggest weakness in the Anthropic ecosystem now.
Haiku is intended as a low cost, fast, and cheap model to do basic work – reading, summarization, web search, etc. And at the time of its release almost a year ago, it did those things reasonably well.
But times change. Models change. Today, Haiku is by far the weakest of its cohort – not particularly cheap any more, and deeply stupid compared to its peers. When you use it inside the Claude ecosystem, it makes more mistakes than it gets things right, with tons of hallucination that even good harnesses like Claude Code struggle to overcome.
To back up, every provider has more or less 3 types of model:
– See: fast, cheap, not as intelligent, low resource usage. Good for web search, summarization, keeping costs low.
– Do: midrange workhorse. Middle of the road on everything, good as your daily driver, especially for writing and execution of tasks.
– Think: big, slow, super smart, expensive, resource intensive. Good for planning, expensive and slow for execution.
OpenAI has GPT-5.6 Luna (see), Terra (do), and Sol (think). Google Gemini has Flash-Lite (see), Flash (do), and Pro (think, though Flash 3.7 is oddly smarter than Pro 3.1). Anthropic has Haiku (see), Sonnet (do), Opus (think), and Fable (light your money on fire, there’s no reason to use Fable, Opus does everything Fable does).
GPT-5.6 Luna has 73% more intelligence and is 77% cheaper. GLM-5.3-Flash is 90% smarter and 59% cheaper. Even Gemini Flash-Lite is 23% smarter and 54% cheaper, and almost no one likes that model.
This is why adopting a hybrid provider strategy is so important now if you want a great combination of speed, cost, and brains. Locking yourself into one provider means that when your provider falls behind, you’re stuck with a model that costs more and gives you less than what you could get elsewhere.
Brand loyalty has no place in generative AI, despite what the various companies say. The technology moves so fast that today’s thoroughbred is tomorrow’s donkey, and abstracting your stack gives you the ability to pivot with the times without rebuilding everything all the time – and it gives you leverage with vendors trying to lock you in.
Sorry Claude Haiku
Literally everyone
Is better than you
(and yes, I was sitting here counting on my fingers for the actual haiku)
