You Ask, I Answer: Building Proactive AI Marketing Agents?

Summary

In today's episode, I walk through how to build a proactive AI agent that identifies wasted ad spend and redistributes budget without manual prompting. Here's what this means for you. You'll see how documented standard operating procedures become the foundation that lets any agentic system function reliably. You'll also learn these concepts: the 5P framework from Trust Insights as a planning blueprint, why deterministic systems must run alongside agentic layers for safety, and how scheduled tasks in tools like Claude Code or Hermes Agent enable hands-off automation.

Key Takeaways

  • You'll learn how the 5P framework (Purpose, People, Process, Platform, Performance) gives you the structure needed before any agentic system can operate
  • You'll discover why documenting your definition of waste and your definition of success becomes the critical first step to building proactive AI
  • You'll see how combining deterministic Python scripts with scheduled agentic tasks creates a reliable two-part automation system
  • You'll explore how API access to ad platforms like Google Ads and Meta Ads lets agents take action autonomously
  • You'll understand why adding technical indicators such as MACD prevents agents from running wild on your ad accounts

In today's episode, Jack asks how do you build an AI system that proactively identifies marketing gaps instead of just reacting to the prompts we give it? Prompts are brainstorming useful, but the bigger shift is that AI executes. I want an AI that tells me find three ads wasting spend and redistribute that budget without me having to manually ask it to pull the raw us every week. How do we move from reactive prompting to proactive agents? Well, first you need an agent infrastructure, that would help.

And the agent infrastructure you specifically need is something that has feedback loops in it. So you're talking about something like a clawed managed agents, or uh clawed code or clawed co-work or Microsoft code co-pilot co-work or something that has those reactive capabilities, those those product capabilities where there's basically a scheduled task that's running in the background, right? That's really what's going on in a lot of those systems. Which means you need one of those systems, you need to have it set up and it needs to be able to run in your environment and access all that data. Now, here is my number one question for you, Jack.

Do you have that defined now? Those tasks that you're just talking about, the ability for a machine to understand what wasteful spending is. How do you do that now? How would you define that now? And where is it written down and how in depth is it written down?

If the answer is, oh, I just know it, you are not going to be able to do what you want. You are not going to be able to make those proactive managed agents because the agent doesn't know what to do. You have to have all that so clearly written down, have standard operating procedures documented that you can say to the machine, here is how to do this process. And the way you wouldn't you would the best way to do this is to use the 5P framework by Trust Insights. Purpose, people, process, platform, performance.

Purpose. What is the purpose to reduce wasted ad spend? Right? And you would do this in user stories. You know, as an ads manager, I need to have an AI agent proactively identify you know watch my ad accounts for wasteful spend and turn off those ads that are wasting spent that I'm not getting results so that I maximize my uh limited advertising budget.

That's a great user story. The people obviously is you, but also your stakeholders who are you doing this for, and and what is their definition of success? Because if you don't agree on definitions of success, you're in for a very bad time. Your process, this is where the uh as as the folks like to say, this is where the rubber meets the road. Um, what is your process for making the determination that something is or is not wasteful spend?

If you don't know the answer to that, if you don't have that documented, you can't do this task. So you have to be super clear about waste. What constitutes waste? Is it low ROAS? Is it low conversions?

What is waste? Document it out. If you have templates, and is what is the ad system supposed to do? Is it written out? Platform, your ad platform probably has an API.

Do you have permission to use it? Especially if you're working on behalf of clients, do you have permission to use the API? Some clients don't let you do that if you're working at an ad agency. Um, so do you have permission to do that? Do you have um pre baked materials for shutting down an ad, spinning up an ad, uh, your ad templates, your creative templates, and things like that, and then performance.

What constitutes success, or in this case, what constitutes failure, and over what period of time, and do you have robust anomaly detection and monitoring built in? If you don't have those things, it's very difficult to build any AI system, much less an agentic system, that can effectively do what you want. So you've got to be able to say this is what success or failure looks like. And this is how to know when to turn things on and off. If you're using something like Google Ads or Meta Ads, yes, they have APIs that can do exactly that.

That can take you can import data on a regular schedule, like hourly even. You can run that through a deterministic uh set of scripts like Python scripts to calculate what your return on ad spend are and have those deterministic scripts deliver go no go on any given ad. I would suggest that you have things like moving average convergence divergence indicators inside your scripts because otherwise they're going to potentially run all kinds of wild on you, which is not super uh not super great. And then you need to have the deterministic systems to say this is what you should do instead. And if the systems don't have that, you're again you're in for a bad time.

So all of those are how you would build that. Then once you've got all that document and built out, then you build your agentic system around it. And for this, if I was going to do this myself, I would do this as a two part system. I would have the deterministic system running on a simple VPS of some kind, and then I would have the agentic portion running in something like Hermes Agent, uh, or honestly anything with schedule, clawed code, clawed co work, they can all run scheduled tasks. Anything that has a scheduled task and a wake up would do the job for what you want it to do.

So, Jack, that's how you'd build this. It is not going to be easy, and it's going to be very, very expensive to build all that. Once you get it working, it'll be hands off for the most part. But getting it working is super difficult. So good luck.
