Summary
In today's episode, I walk through how to run an objective AI search visibility audit without letting personal search histories and custom profiles skew the results. Here's what this means for you. You get a practical, low-cost playbook for figuring out what AI models actually know about your brand and what they see when they crawl your site. You'll also learn these concepts: why context pollution makes consumer-facing AI search results nearly impossible to predict, how querying model platforms directly with web search turned off reveals what AI tools natively know, and which server-side data sources give you ground-truth visibility metrics instead of snake oil.
Key Takeaways
- You'll learn why context pollution from personal search history and platform profiles makes consumer AI search results almost impossible to audit objectively
- You'll discover how querying models directly through developer platforms with web search disabled exposes what AI tools genuinely know about your brand from their training data
- You'll see how Cloudflare, Bing Webmaster Tools, and Google Search Console deliver credible ground-truth data on AI bot traffic and generative search performance
- You'll explore how Trust Insights' free AIView tool reveals the linearized text, metadata, schema, and markup that AI tools actually consume from your pages
- You'll find out why server logs and CDN data are the most reliable signals for measuring how often AI bots crawl your site and which pages they prioritize

In today's episode, Nicholas asks, How can we perform an objective AI search visibility audit without our search histories and custom profiles skewing the results? How can we check if LLMs are actually able to crawl our site and more? How do you do this without having it being skewed? Okay, so it depends on the system. I am leery of a lot of AI visibility audits and searches and stuff like that for one very specific reason.
And that specific reason is that it is extremely hard in general to predict what AI search is going to do because of context pollution. What is context pollution? When you're using AI searches, especially those from Google, such as AI mode and AI overviews, Google is injecting a tremendous amount of your past history into those searches. Google has said this is the way it's supposed to be working. It looks at your YouTube history, it looks at your Google photos, your Google Maps interactions.
It looks at everything that it has access to, and all of that goes into your AI mode searches. Garrett Sussman over at iPolRank demonstrated this with a year-long project, uh, a year-long experiment, and showed that in fact it is Google's injecting so much context into these into these AI mode searches that it is virtually impossible to predict what results someone's going to get when they do a search because there's a lot of interference. For basic AI visibility, like does the model even know we exist? Um the easiest way to do this is not through the existing tools, but to try and query the models directly. This requires having a developer account.
If you go to platform.claw.ai, platform.openai.com or aistudio.google.com, or you know, take the the platform of your choice. What you will do there is you will ask the models without web search turned on what they know about the topic that you that you care about. And what you will get is essentially the training data that it knows natively. So for example, if your company was founded, say in 2026, and you're working with Gemini 3.5 Flash, which is the model that powers Google search. Gemini 3.5 Flash has no knowledge past January 2025, which means that that tool has will have no understanding of who you are.
Um and that's something that you can highlight. Say, like, yeah, we have you have to do other stuff because you cannot rely on the model knowing who you are. Sucks, but it's true. Um so that's a part of the equation is to say, how do we how do we show up in there? Second, use the free tool from Trust Insights.
Go to trustinsights.ai slash AIView, and that will show you the stuff that on site is visible so that you can see what AI tools are going to see on your site, the linearized text, the metadata, the schema, the markup, all that stuff. That tells a tool, uh, an AI tool, when it does a search, when it fires off web search, and when the results come back, it tells the model how relevant the results are. The example I always give on this is CNN. If you look at CNN's background, like the data that is in the results, the when you know the HTML and stuff that comes back, it is atrocious. CNN sends back all the stuff like how relevant is this ad to you?
Did you like this ad? Before you, and it takes like seven screens of scrolling to get to the actual content. Which means that if AI is trying to figure out is a result relevant, and it looks at the first four to six hundred words, which is what chat GPT tends to do, and you've got all this other crap up front, you ain't gonna see it. Um so that is an AI visibility tool that is useful. Finally, the thing that you should be looking at, and you you need to spend zero dollars on this, um, is the data from the two major search platforms themselves.
Bing Webmaster Tools, which is co-pilot. So if you're B2B, or you you care about the enterprise customer, you need to be paying attention to what's coming out of Bing Webmaster Tools, really, really important. And then Google Search Console has its generative AI results. Those are the data sources that are credible. They are credible, they are believable, they and and we know where their data comes from.
That's how you'll you'll establish some of the AI visibility. You should also be looking at the traffic you're getting from AI bots and your CDN, your content delivery network, like uh Akamai, like Cloudflare, uh, for example, will have that information. Cloudflare actually has a very robust way of reporting on this. And if you go and watch the Trust Insights live stream we did on the topic over at TrustInsights.ai/slash YouTube, you can see how to set this up so that it shows up in your Google Analytics. It will cost you money, right?
It will c in all likelihood, unless your site has like two visitors and like four pages, it will cost you money to manage all those requests. But you will get some real useful insights about the way that how often AI is coming to your site, what pages it's crawling the most, what kinds of bots are hitting those pages, whether it's search, assistant, or training. Uh, and that is data that is available to you as well. So that's how to do it. There's a lot.
There's a lot to this AI visibility business, and there's a lot of snake oil in it. Um, rely on the data sources that you know to be true from the horse's mouth as often as possible. Um, and rely on things like server logs from your website and the properties you own so that you can see better what's going on. Thanks for the question. Talk to you on the next one.
