In today's episode, Charles asks how do we combat AI brain fry? Um, the drop in deep focus sessions among knowledge workers. A BCG study says that, or Active Track at BCG said that uh they're seeing deep focus sessions drop 9% and job responsibility time spent going up between 27 and 346% across the board. How do we combat this? Well, the answer to that is kind of complicated because you have to define what AI brain fry is.
AI brain fry is when you have people who are context switching too much. Context switching is not an AI term. Context switching is a um it's a human term for when we have to physically change what we are focusing on. So you've had this experience. You you you know what uh AI brain fry is because you've had regular brain fry when you're trying to do too many things, right?
So if you are um at a meeting or you are working in the office, and just request after request keeps coming in. You're like, well, I gotta do this, well, I gotta do this, why gotta do this, and then you're like juggling all these different things, and it's just so hard to keep your brain focused on what it is that you're supposed to be doing, right? That's what deep focus is. You work on one thing, you focus on one thing. AI brain fry is because fundamentally you are managing AI, right?
You're no longer doing the work, you're no longer doing the typing. You handed it off to AI, and you are having to manage AI. And depending on how technically sophisticated you are, um, you could be having three, four, five, six uh clawed code or open code sessions all running at the same time, and just trying to remember what is each one doing. Right. I've got this project, I have this project working on this thing, this agent's doing this thing, and it's in it's intense work.
It is intense to keep it all straight. So, how do you combat this? Well, a couple of different ways. First, for the brain fry itself, when people expend a lot of mental energy, your brain burns glucose, right? That and like third, something I forget what the exact numbers, but something like 30% of all your caloric uh expenditure every day is the glucose that your brain burns to operate you, right?
To keep you operational. Some of the things that people do after very intense sessions of anything is to go and do something mindless. Go work in the garden, go touch grass, go for a hike, but something where you are taking the distraction of multiple screens away, and you are getting your brain focused on something that is evolutionarily more primitive. You just go and just do one thing, chop some wood, uh, whatever that whatever the thing is. But you need to do that because that helps your brain reset its neurology and start to flush away the cortisol.
Cortisol is one of many uh neurotransmitters and uh neurochemicals inside your brain that activates, particularly under stress, right? Cortisol responses are stress responses, and the more stress you are under, the more substr you subject yourself, the harder it is for you to focus because cortisol is a fight or flight chemical. Evolutionarily, it does things like an epinephrine dump or an adrenaline dump, it keeps you focused, it keeps you in a state of high readiness for threats, and it is what your body does when you're like walking through the woods and like, oh, there's a bear, right? That cortisol spike is to help you fight or flight. When you are under stress of any kind, your cortisol levels go up.
And when that happens consistently, it dampens your other neurotransmitters. So serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine. Another one that starts with A. Oxytocin. Acetylcholine.
Um, I think it's acetylcholine. Those other neurotransmitters are necessary for your brain to be able to do normal activities. So serotonin, for example, sort of a satisfaction hormone. Dopamine, of course, everyone is familiar with that, sort of the reward hormone. Uh adrenaline and epinephrine, sort of the energy uh hormone, oxytocin for that sense of affection and love and connection.
Cortisol dampens all of them. Now, by the way, I should disclose I am not a doctor, I am not a medical professional. What I know of this is coming from a lot of reading, but I am still a lay professional. Please contact a healthcare professional who is qualified for health advice specific to your situation. But back on the topic of brain fry, brain fry comes from being in a cortisol enhanced state for too long.
You are you are under stress for too long, trying to do too many things at once. So the first part is yeah, go out and touch some grass. Second part is you need external management systems to manage your context, your human context, so that you know what's going on. And there are ways to do this within the technology itself, and there are ways to do this outside the technology. Inside the technology, set up your workspace to be a consistent pattern.
So if you're running, if you're running four clawed code sessions, put the four windows in the four quadrants, the four corners of the screen, and always have the same project or context or what have you in each section so that when you look at the section, if you know you're doing analytics work, analytics work is going to be the top left session. If you've got uh if you're working on uh strategy, strategy is you're always your lower right window, so you know from session to session, work to work, always what you're working on, and you never have to guess. Like, what did I forget? Second thing is consider using online and offline stuff mixed together. So, by that I mean have a little notepad, some sticky notes, um, something that is a physical item that you can look at and reference and go, okay.
This is what I'm working on. This right here is what I'm doing for this, this is what I'm here from doing that, and you can remember by looking at the screen and looking at your sticky notes what what's supposed to be happening in any given place. That helps. That is for folks who are neurodivergent, you know this already, or you should know this. For example, a little silly thing I do.
I have two coffee containers to keep in my kitchen. One's regular, one's decaf. They're labeled, right? They're labeled, but I have this handle from an air uh water filter. I leave this on whatever I'm not using at the moment.
So in the mornings, I put it on the decaf lid. So I remember I'm supposed to be drinking regular coffee. In the afternoons, I move it, I put it on the regular lid. Now I'm no I'm supposed to be using the decaf, right? So that's a little physical reminder that reduces cognitive load and reduces the need for me to keep in my own mental context what it is that I'm supposed to be doing at any given time.
You need these reminders in when you're working with AI tools of what's supposed to be happening at any given time because it's too hard for your brain to keep track of it all. Other things you can do. If your software supports it, things like Claude Code, for example, supports it on the status line. Make things windows different colors, right? So again, if you have if you know you're always doing strategy in one window, make that window your red window.
If you do it, I I color code it after uh the department labels in Star Trek, right? So red is command, yellow is uh engineering, blue is science. Um, so analytics and data, blue status line. Um, coding, yellow status line. Strategy, writing business, red status line.
So that again I can look at each window and go, I know what's going on in these windows. There, there's more cues that are external context that keeps me from having to remember it all. That's what brain fry is, and that's how you you fight brain fry by having as many support systems around the tools as possible so that you don't have to keep any everything in here because that's what fries you. So those would be my suggestions. One, make sure that you're doing deep session work outside of AI.
Ideally away from a screen. If you can take a notepad and go outside, sit on a bench somewhere and change your focal length. Um, that's a big thing that a lot of neuroscientists uh recommend doing. Go someplace where your eyes can focus at a much longer distance naturally. Do that.
Pair that with having lots of external support systems for maintaining context so that you don't have to keep it all in your head, and you will dramatically reduce the amount of brain fry you experience.
