Disclose your use of AI.
Ruby King and I were chatting about surreptitious use of AI earlier today and one of the hottest topics right now is use of AI in fan fiction.
For those who don’t know, fan fiction is where authors write works within an existing IP franchise, often without the franchise owner’s permission. Examples of this would be people writing fiction set in the Pluribus (Apple TV) universe or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, etc.
Fan fiction authors, as long as they charge no money for their works or make no attempt to monetize/commercialize are generally tolerated by most IP franchises as a sort of free advertising.
Thus, the incentive to use AI is mainly for status/attention, to be perceived as popular or liked, rather than to earn money. And the writers in fan fiction communities are often adamantly opposed to the use of AI (in general, and in fan fiction especially).
So it was quite a stir when a “John Doe” released a paper today documenting that people who literally copy and paste out of Claude are pasting meta-data from Claude, a specific HTML tag: “font-claude-response-body”. This occurs in the web interface as well as the desktop app.
Unlike AI detectors which detect measures like perplexity and surprisal – and which ARE incorrect a fair amount of time – having actual HTML markup in the code is definitive. No one inserts that meta-data into their HTML for fun or by accident. And it obviously doesn’t impact ChatGPT or Gemini originated stories.
The fan fiction community is in an uproar about this, and it comes back to something I’ve been advocating for since the beginning of generative AI: disclose your use of it. Disclose early, disclose often, and that gives your audience – if they have a philosophical objection to consuming AI-generated content – the opportunity to skip past the AI-generated work.
It’s respectful to your audience.
It also reinforces what is truly human-led, which is essential for enforcing copyright. AI-generated works have no copyright; while this is irrelevant in fan fiction (since it’s all an IP violation), it absolutely matters for regular work.
And hey… maybe check your own output documents to see if Claude’s marked those up too.
