Here’s the title: Why I Chose the Worst Hotel I Could Find — and It Made Coming Home Feel Like a Luxury Vacation

A bit of reflective fun on a Friday afternoon. If you travel frequently, at least once every so often, choose accommodations that are notably worse than however you live. (without being dangerously unsafe, of course)

When you get home, home will feel like a palace.

This week, I traveled on client business, and the hotel nearest the client was a Hilton Garden Inn for an eye-watering $649 per night. I’m sorry, there is no Hilton Garden Inn on the planet worth that much.

So I chose a relatively nearby hotel, about 10 minutes away, with a suspiciously low price for the region.

There was a reason for that. It was safe, in that there were no obvious hazards, but, to put it nicely, it has seen better days. Or decades. Based on the decor and architecture, I’m guessing it was probably last refurbished in the Nixon administration.

Still, it had the basics – operational (but very slow) internet, AC, clean sheets, and electricity. And bonus, there was a Walmart next door. But boy, everything else was rough. It looked like Johnny Beltsanderhands stayed there recently, with as many scuffs, dents, and damage as there was on every major surface.

And when I got home? Home looked AMAZING.

Sometimes a little perspective is all you need to remind you just how good you’ve got it.
