Strategic planning will be the hottest programming language of 2027.
At Trust Insights, one of the things we’ve been thinking a lot about as we implement progressively more complex forms of AI is what you need to build great AI outputs. We came up with a five-level system called the five-levels of AI enablement based on product market fit: Done by you, done with you, done for you, done without you, done ahead of you.
Done by you is you chatting with the AI of your choice. You’re doing all the work, all the typing.
Done with you are things like gems and GPTs, where you have task level standard operating procedures that these can execute with your assistance.
Done for you are agents like Claude Cowork and Openwork and Claude Code, where you’re providing project plans, and then the agents go off and do things.
At level 4 – done without you – you’re providing job descriptions for systems like OpenClaw, where the agentic system acts like an employee in your organization.
The logical progression is a strategic charter at level 5, where a truly persistent, agentic organization, like a division of your company, has a strategic charter with agent managers supervising individual agents.
Those people who are great at organizational strategy and organization-level strategic thinking are going to flourish as AI reaches level 5, people like my cofounder and CEO, Katie Robbert. She’s a master at designing organizations and repairing failing ones. Ask her sometime about how she 10x’d the revenue of our team at our previous agency.
Each level REQUIRES mastery of the previous level. If you’re not good at giving directions, then you’re not good at standard operating procedures, which means you’re not good at project plans, and you’re certainly not good at job descriptions, and no one should let you near organizational planning. You cannot be an AI strategist in the Level 5 sense if you have not already mastered the first 4 levels.
Here’s a simple bench test for level 5. Could you create a charter for a division of your company or a new startup that was self-contained and you could hand off to a group of people and leave them for 6 months, unattended, and know that they’re going to get great results? If the answer is yes, you are ready for level 5 AI. If the answer is no, you are not ready for level 5 AI.
And I’ll emphasize again: you cannot skip to level 5. You cannot take your fancy strategic counsel consulting title and just glue AI onto it if you’ve never gotten past asking ChatGPT what the weather is. One of my martial arts teachers loved to say “don’t reach for something that isn’t there”, meaning don’t try to skip ahead if you haven’t mastered where you are.
