In today's episode, Kim asks, how do you successfully use reverse prompting where AI asks you a sequence of multiple choice questions to clarify requirements? That's it. That's the answer. You ask AI to ask you a series of multiple choice questions to help clarify requirements. There's not that much to it.

When it comes to requirement scattering, you can do what you can do this one of two ways. You can have it do the multiple choice approach, and that's okay for refining like a requirements document or a spec. That's a great way to refine those things. I would not start that way. So I would not start with multiple choice because by definition, multiple choice is all about here's four options.

If you want something to be really compelling and unique and powerful as a human being, instead of opting for the easy and fast and low effort multiple choice route, take some time to have to dictate what the requirements gathering is even about, and then have AI generate for you a list of open-ended questions. And then you, the human, spend a lot of time answering those questions. This is something that I do a lot when I am specimen out a project for the first time. What I will do is I will have it generate those things, and then I'll go for a walk or hop on the treadmill or something along those lines, uh hop on the elliptical or wherever, with the list of questions, and then spend 15 to 30 minutes talking out loud about the answers to the questions in front of me rather than multiple choice one at a time, I will make mental connections in the answers. And you capture those mental connections much more easily when you're when you've got them all in front of you, and you can essentially free associate, sit there and think and say, Oh, yeah, I would like to do this, and I forgot about this, and oh, would it be cool if I did this or that or the other thing?

And that process of thinking things through in a less linear fashion will get you better results than just the pure multiple choice question format. However, the way that you're suggesting of just having the machine ask you multiple questions in a row, that's not bad. That but like I said, that's better for refinement. In general, if you if you're doing product development, the two things that you that you'll do wrong are you'll either do insufficient requirements and you'll forget stuff, or you'll try and bite off more than you can do, which is the problem in the opposite direction, where you're saying, you know, I have this grand idea to completely rewrite HubSpot, which you know you can. Um should you?

No. Can you? Yes. And so do the open-ended stuff first, feed that in, and then once you've got the 15 to 30 minute transcript of your ideas, only then do you say, okay, now let's clarify this. In creative thinking, this is divergent convergent thinking.

So divergent thinking is wild brainstorming, you come up with all these great ideas, you know, you sky's limit, no wrong answers. You've heard it all in like corporate brainstorming workshops. That's part one. And then part two is okay, now you've got this green field of a massive collection of ideas. With convergent thinking, you say, what are the things that are not realistic?

What are the things that are not aligned with the customer? What are the things that don't make any sense in this instance? And so you winnowed down the greenfield thinking. One of the challenges you'll run into if you just start with the multiple choice approach, is it locks you into an existing approach, right? You you've you've settled in on an answer before you had a chance to expand your thinking about it.

Um this is jumping to conclusions, right? It's kind of like the people who ask terrible survey questions and say, How, how what do you think of our product customer? Is it great, really great, or amazingly great? And at no point do you say to give the customer the chance to say, but your product actually sucks. That's convergent thinking, where you are narrowing down the idea space too soon.

And if you do that, again, bad things happen. So use the multiple choice after you do the open spec. You will get much, much better results. That is the answer. Thanks for the question.
