The Secret to AI Productivity: Stop Asking It to Do Everything and Start Making It Build Tools for You

AI can make its own tools, but only if you ask it to.

One of the biggest productivity mistakes I see in the use of AI, especially in vibe coding, is trying to have AI do everything.

Generative AI models are fundamentally language models. They’re good at language. They’re not good at things that aren’t language.

Many of the tasks we ask AI to tackle aren’t language tasks, like reading a web page. Reading the page is a language task, but fetching it is not. AI tool makers like OpenAI and Anthropic have added capabilities in their software to do that, but they’re not as reliable as we would like.

But AI can do better, if it’s told to do so. You can ask it, for example, to use Python and Playwright and create a script that will fetch a web page far more reliably. It can run that in chat and get a much better result, or even build its own mini app to do that in a vibe coding tool.

The trick is, AI doesn’t think that way unless you ask it to.

The trick for you and me is to know that we need to ask it to do that.

Stop having AI reinvent the wheel every time it performs a non-AI task. Instead, have it build great tools it can reuse the first time you tackle a task, then remind it in future tasks that those tools exist.
