Mastering Horizontal and Vertical Thinking: The AI Competence Your Business Needs

Are you thinking horizontally AND vertically?

One of the most useful meta skills in the age of AI is to know how to think horizontally AND vertically, especially as agents become the norm for how we use AI.

Here’s what I mean. When we’re developing AI use cases, when we’re implementing AI, we have to ask ourselves for any given application whether the application is horizontal or vertical.

Take your org chart, for example. Org charts have horizontals and verticals. Verticals are things like departments – HR, finance, ops, marketing. Horizontals are things like ranks – staff, managers, execs, etc.

There are tasks that you might perform in a horizontal – all managers have to reconcile timesheets, for example. There are tasks that you might perform in a vertical – all finance folks must reconcile their work using GAAP.

Not everyone in the company needs to do all finance tasks, hence the vertical thinking. Managers don’t need to do executive tasks, hence the horizontal thinking.

Here’s why this matters for AI specifically: when we’re building things like GPTs, Gems, skills, and agents, what we don’t want is to reinvent the wheel over and over again. Instead, we must think through what things should be made available at a horizontal level, a vertical level, or even company-wide.

For example, a GPT that handles expense reports is both a vertical and a horizontal in that it’s something everyone in the company would use. But a GPT that writes social media posts for the company social media account is not something execs probably would need.

The greatest big picture challenge organizations face as they march up the adoption curve is governance, and figuring out what to build – and more important, what not to build.
