I feel a tiny bit sorry for all the marketers rushing to join and participate on Reddit after hearing lots of pundits say Reddit is where AI gets its answers.
There’s a reason for that.
It can be an exceptionally unforgiving place, especially if you are a marketer and your intent is obvious. Reddit tends to heavily punish commercial intent, which is one of the reasons why AI uses it as a source so often. Redditors generally try – correctly – to chase us marketers away because our intent is to take value, not give it.
We – marketers – are not welcome there, broadly. In places where we are, we are given little tags that denote our status as marketers, a scarlet letter of sorts.
Reddit sees marketing as a virus and its members as the immune system. Marketing is something to be expelled, not welcomed.
So how do you capably use it?
The same way you should have been marketing all along. “Be human” is a trope, a cliche specifically because very few marketers can actually do that, and very few stakeholders have the patience to wait for results that are measured in years, not days. But the only way to not be expelled as a virus is to become part of the immune system – and that means being an actual person, not a marketer.
Put aside marketing entirely.
Can you do as some “thought leaders” advocate and just sign up for throwaway accounts and spam subreddits relentlessly? Sure. That will work for about two seconds in Internet time. And then when you piss off enough Redditors, the folks with the heavy artillery will come for you, and it will not be pretty.
Think of Reddit like a bar frequented only by bouncers.
Tread cautiously. Be ready to give far more than you take. Tell your stakeholders you expect absolutely no ROI or results for the first six months. Tell your PR team or agency to plan for at least one complete shitshow a month that could be brand damaging – everything from NSFW responses to angry Redditors doxxing your C-Suite. And go in with a skin thicker than an elephant, because you WILL be given the business the first time you try to pitch anything and you’re probably not going to enjoy it.
