Two enduring maxims:
Fast. Cheap. Good. Choose any two.
You get what you pay for.
Earlier today, my friend alerted me about a discussion on X, visible in the photo on this post. TLDR: people said they didn’t want to pay for books because they couldn’t afford them, and thought all authors should be required to have their books on Kindle Unlimited.
Sit with this for a moment.
The solution here, for this part of the audience, is AI slop.
A human written book takes 6-9 months if you want to do it well. During that time, the author is not earning anything from their efforts. To then say they shouldn’t be compensated fairly for their efforts means that you’re unwilling to pay a human for their work.
So you’re going to get AI. AI can crank out complete drivel and slop in 6-9 hours, easy. Set up Sonnet 5, give it a trashy plot, turn on Claude Code, and boom, there’s the poster’s super cheap book. It won’t be any good. It won’t be satisfying. It won’t be compelling.
But it’ll be cheap and fast.
If you dislike AI slop, then you have to be willing to support human-led efforts with your money. You can’t decry AI slop and at the same time demand prices that only the extensive use of AI can meet.
You get what you pay for.
