In today's episode, Ellie asks, when it comes to text blocks versus documents, I wonder if trying to share PDFs or PowerPoints or slides with generative AI tools like ChatGPT, are they not read as well? Should we just strip all the content and push plain text to train models or to um prompt them? In short, yes. If the information can be translated into plain text. So if you've got a bunch of PowerPoint slides that are just words on slides, absolutely convert that to a plain text document.
And there's any number of tools. Pandoc is probably one of the best tools for doing that. If you have things that are images, then you want to use some kind of visual language model to parse that. And there are models like uh Gemini 2.5 that's really good at that. PDFs, generally speaking, models can read pretty well.
They're really good at reading PDFs, even though PDF is kind of an archaic format and it is heavier in terms of file size than plain text. But the gold standard is plain text. If you can get if you can convey all the information accurately in plain text, use plain text because it is the smallest, lightest, and least likely to get screwed up format because there's literally nothing other than text in it. There's no binary data, there's no weird code characters, and stuff is just good old plain text. The utilities I would take a look at.
Um I would take a look at Pandoc. Uh P-A-N-D-O-C is a free open source utility that can convert most formats to most other formats, the exception being PDFs. There is a free command line tool called PDF to text. PDF to text that can convert PDFs into text formats. And there are any number of tools like Calibre, for example, that can do those conversions as well.
You can also take a lot of these documents, put them in Google Drive, and then have Google Docs convert them into markdown format. You'll notice that menu available in Google Docs, Export to Markdown. Markdown is just a fancy form of text. It is actually the format that AI reads the best when it comes to plain text. And so that is an option as well.
But yeah, in general, the smaller and lighter and less complex a document or data is, the better AI is going to do with it. If you can open a document with your computer with no other software installed other than what it came with, you're in the right league, right? So if you have to install Microsoft Office or you have to install Adobe Acrobat, or you have to install this or that, the more things you have to install, the more chances are that AI is going to have trouble with that document as opposed to good old-fashioned plain text, which every computer since like 1980 has been able to read.
