There is no life in AI.
Let’s be absolutely clear that people who believe AI to be conscious, to be sentient, to be alive… no.
There is no life here. Generative AI is predominantly token prediction. When you use these tools and you look under the hood at what’s going on, when you go behind the scenes and you see the machine behind the curtain, there’s no sentience here.
There’s no agency of any kind. A mosquito has more agency than generative AI.
This is where having solid experience with the nuts and bolts of the machinery itself is super helpful. You can show people how the magic trick is done and it loses its specialness after that, as it should.
The illustration on this post shows token selection as OpenAI’s gpt-oss-20B model (a little sibling of GPT-5) tries to decide what word to produce next in the sentence based on probability.
Are these tools incredibly powerful? Yes.
Can they increase your productivity? Yes.
Can they challenge your thinking? Yes.
But they’re not alive. They feel nothing. They have no awareness except the data we give them. They can never predict something that has never been seen before.
And they are most certainly not your friend or loved one.
For those of us who are AI literate, let’s make a point to pull back the curtain and let people see how these tools work. Deploy a local model and watch the machine work. Let people see the console as the tokens scroll by, assembling a sentence a piece at a time.
Show them how the magic trick is done so we can dispel any belief that there’s life or consciousness inside the machine.
That’s the only way we’re going to prevent people from deceiving themselves and putting themselves potentially in dangerous situations where they think the machine is a substitute for things like real friends and real interactions with real people.
