The One Uncomfortable Truth About AI That Every Educator, Creator, and Business Leader Needs to Hear

“How can we dissuade the use of AI?”

This is a common question among educators but also among creatives and others, even folks in sales and marketing (especially around things like RFP responses).

Here’s my one common answer that makes everyone uncomfortable:

AI doesn’t work when there is no template. What do you do that isn’t templated?

Five paragraph essay? Templated.
Standardized testing? Templated.
RFP? Templated.
RFP response? Templated.
LinkedIn comments? Templated.
Website design? Templated.
Email nurture campaign? Templated.
Python code? Templated.
Pop song? Templated.
Blockbuster film? Templated.
Restaurant menu planning? Templated.
Grocery store end cap layout? Templated.

In our never-ending quest for productivity, we search for templates for EVERYTHING. Sometimes we call them templates, or lesson plans, or standard operating procedures, or derivatives, but whatever we call them, they’re templates. They’re repetitions.

And as I’ve been saying since literally 2015, if you do it with a template today, a machine does it without you tomorrow.

In any part of your job or vocation, if you see a template in use for any given task, know that a machine will take that task away from you at some point.

So, educators, creators, business folks: what do you do that is NOT templated? What do you ask of your students, your employees, your customers that won’t fit in a template, that is so unpredictable that it can only be human?

Business leaders, are you willing to sacrifice the holy grail of productivity to make room for creativity? (most of the time, the answer is no)

Educators, are you willing to sacrifice the sacred cow of testing and the industrial model of education to make room for wildly variable learning? (most of the time, the answer is no by the system, even if the individual educator shouts a resounding yes)

AI will consume EVERYTHING rote and templated. Look hard and look HONESTLY at what you do every day. The only parts of your job, vocation, or education that AI won’t devour are the parts with no possibility of a template.
