Summary
In today's episode, I discuss how AI agents are transforming the B2B buying process by automating research and vendor shortlisting. Here's what this means for you. You must adapt your marketing and sales strategies to cater to machine-led procurement rather than human-led discovery. You'll also learn these concepts: why AI agents replace traditional sales development roles, how transparent pricing affects your visibility to AI researchers, and the reasons buyers now prefer machine research over human sales demos.
Key Takeaways
- You'll discover how AI agents automate the vendor research and shortlisting process that humans used to handle
- You'll see why making your pricing and specifications publicly available prevents AI agents from excluding your brand
- You'll learn how the rise of machine-led shopping changes the traditional B2B sales funnel and reduces the need for sales calls
- You'll understand why buyers increasingly favor AI research over sitting through multiple sales demonstrations

In today's episode, Rob asks, what's one AI trend B2B marketers and sellers can't afford to ignore in the next 12 months? Rob, I can't even tell you what's going to happen in the next 12 weeks, much less the next 12 months. But one of the meta trends that you can see pretty clearly is the use of AI agents to do uh shopping and shortlisting and things like that in B2B. Here's what I mean. Go to any tool like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Perplexy, whatever, turn on the deep research field, and then say, I'm in the market for a new CRM vendor, and it's got to have uh these features and it can't cost more than $25 a seat per month, and it's gotta be, you know, meet these these standards of data quality and stuff.
Go do the research. And these AI agents are very, very capable. They do hallucinate sometimes, but in general, they're very, very capable of going out and finding the data and assembling a report and bringing it back. And this is going to have huge implications, particularly for B2B marketers, because a lot of the time we've spent uh you know time and money and effort trying to build these elaborate sales funnels where we have business development executives and sales development representatives and stuff, people who are you know dialing for dollars and things. And it's all predicated on the idea that humans are coming up with the short list.
Well, you know, in the old days, you would the the CMO would go to the intern, hey, it's like say, hey, intern, you know, make me a short list of companies that have won awards in this space. Because it was a simple and easy heuristic for uh someone to say, someone very junior on the team and go, okay, yeah, I can I can go do that. Now you can specify any amount of research uh that you want. I want to know what the total cost of ownership is. I want to know what this, that, and that is.
You know, what who are the top five competitors and what do people say about them in reviews and all these things that are questions that you used to ask in the buying process or maybe in the thing to ask, but you do now, because the tools can go off and 30 to 45 minutes later come back to you with a short list. I'll give you a real simple example. Not too long ago, uh on the Trust Insights website, I was looking for a new server to host our marketing automation software. And rather than go and shop around reviews and things like that, I gave it a detailed prompt. I said, you know, I'm I want to pay this much, this is the spec that I need the server to have.
I don't care where it's hosted, but it should have a co-location center somewhere in the east eastern seaboard of the United States for latency purposes. And it just gave it a bunch of buying criteria. It went off, it looked at all the different vendors, and it found a vendor that got very good reviews, that exceeded my quality standards, and that was half the price of my current vendor. And so my current vendor, I just kind of vaporized. I left.
And now I'm on this new system, it works great. I'm very happy, I'm very satisfied with the new service. That is the trend that B2B marketers and sellers need to be aware of is that people will be using these tools more and more to do the boring part of shopping, right? The part where, oh, do I have to get on a sales call? Do I need to listen to a demo?
Or can I just have a tool go and do the research? And here's the funny part. People say, Oh, well, these these tools hallucinate. Yes, they do. They can.
Um, but if I think about would I prefer to have a tool with mild hallucinations, saying it has features it it doesn't have, or would I prefer to sit down through eight sales demos? I'm gonna take the hallucinations. I'm gonna say, you know what, I don't care if it's you know, as long as it's not wildly factually wrong on something, I would much rather deal with a machine that's not gonna call me eight times a day, and that's gonna change the selling process, it's gonna change the buying process because who wants to deal with that? So B2B sales in particular is going to have to radically shift to deal with an environment and a world where people don't want to talk to you, and you're a necessary evil to talk to. And oh, by the way, if you don't have pricing on your website, and someone asks AI what your pricing is, it might hallucinate something, and then you have to figure out how to have that conversation with somebody, or worse, you don't make the list.
So, for example, in my prompt I was for a new server I was in the market for, I said, exclude vendors that don't have pricing. I I don't have time for you to to walk me through a 20 minute demo. I'm not gonna listen to you. I'm going to gather the data that's available. And I told the the research deep research agent, don't include vendors that don't have pricing.
And they and so all those companies that have a call us for a quote, you didn't make the cut. So that's the the trend that B2B marketers are really gonna have to pay very careful attention to because it's going to impact your sales. You will see your sales funnel and your customer journey dry up if you don't have information that matches what people are asking machines to go find uh for. So that that's the answer to that question. Thanks for the question.
