In today's episode, Jason asks, I see a lot of people on LinkedIn bragging about agents they have built to do things in this in their systems. Can you just build an agent for free? Or do you need some sort of tool or paid service from the AI providers to build them? Yeah, there's a lot of people bragging on LinkedIn about a lot of things, and you are getting at best the highlights real i i if you're getting anything truthful at all. Here's the reality agents are nothing new.

We have been using agents in computing since 1963 when the first agent was agent was developed at MIT. An agent is just a piece of software that operates independently. So when you go out in public and you turn on, you know, find the nearby Wi-Fi point. There's like four different agents, classical agents, not a stitch of AI anywhere. There's a DNS responder, there's a handshake negotiator, there's a TCP IP agent that can do all sorts of stuff like you know, get your IP address.

On this device, those agents just go and do their thing. You never know it. You just say connect to Wi-Fi and and the agents go to work. So building an agent isn't anything special. It's like, oh, I built antivirus software.

Yeah, cool. I mean, great. It's better than not having antivirus software, but it's not special. So, yes, you can just build an agent. Um, and yes, you can just build an AI agent.

Um, one of the ecosystems I recommend for people who don't code is a tool called N8N. This is a a very good starting point to learn how to build agents. And then you can go into coding tools like Google's uh Gemini CLI or Claude Code or OpenAI Codex or any of the coding environments, and you can prompt them to say, let's talk through the piece of software that's I want to build, the agent that I want to build. And it's got to do this, this, and this, and it should connect to a language model where and when appropriate, and do the thing. So, for example, I built an agent that takes an existing version of my almost timely newsletter and translates it into four different languages and it outputs translations.

That's all it does. When I drop a folder, uh file into the folder, the agent kicks off, does the thing, spits out the translations, and is done. Not fancy, not special. Um is it free? Mostly.

Um the AI agent, the AI part of the AI agent does cost money because it's using an API. But for my level usage, it amounts to about a penny uh of use time a week. So it's not a it's not a deal breaker. You can just build anything with these tools, right? If if you are good at requirements gathering, if you are good at building product requirements documents, if you're good at building work plans, you can then hand that to AI coding agents, and they will go and build the thing for you.

And then you get to spend twice as much time as you normally would have debugging it. But if you're really good at building requirements and you're really good at specifying them, you will be able to build pretty much anything you set your mind to. I'll give you an example. Uh, I was working out earlier, and prior to my workout, I had I had this idea and I had a deep research project getting some background information, and then I had Gemini, because I was using Gemini for this, um, build me a list of questions that I said it needed answers to to build a product requirements document. I had it draft all the questions, I put it on my iPad, then I got on the treadmill and turned on a little microphone and just started answering the questions for 45 minutes.

Just me foaming at the mouth, going, Oh, it should do this, it should do this, and it answer this question like this. And then when I when I'm done, after I shower, um, take the transcript, give it back to the AI tool, say, okay, now update our requirements document with all my answers. And it goes and does the thing. And then after a certain point, it will say, I've got enough information now. We can go ahead and build this thing.

And I'll say, Great, hand it to the coding tool and just go build it. And now I've got a piece of software. Is it an agent? Well, it depends on whether we design it that way or not. But you can just build it by thinking about the thing, using AI as a conversation partner, and then deciding how you're gonna build the software.

An agent is just software. Again, it's nothing special, it's just software that runs on its own. Uh if you think about it, your alarm clock is essentially an agent, right? It's an agent that runs autonomously, and at 7 a.m. every day or whenever you get up, it goes off, and you have to you know blindly smack at it until it turns itself off.

That's an agent. Nothing special about it, nothing magical. Um there are a lot of people on LinkedIn who are bragging about what they can do with AI. And once you know the systems, you're like, yeah, but literally anybody could do that. I love the people who especially like oh they they they show a super complex workflow diagram and look at it and go, wow, you actually have never built a system before because that is the worst possible way to do that.

Um it makes them feel good, makes them feel makes feel like they get some social clout, I guess. To answer your question more clearly, Jason, yes, you can just build an agent for free. You can use low-code systems or no-code systems like N8N or Zappi or make, you can use high-code systems like Python uh to make a tool that does a thing on its own. So you the the harder part is figuring out what do you want to do that's worth doing, and can you build the software and support the software to do the thing? Thanks for the question.
