Ironwood.
One of the most under-rated announcements from Google’s Cloud Next was their Ironwood 7 TPU announcement back in April.
Let’s decode what it means. A TPU is a Tensor Processing Unit. These are Google’s proprietary, in-house AI chips they make and use within Google Cloud. Ironwood is the 7th generation of these, and in a departure from past versions, now comes in a high-speed, high-efficiency inference version.
Inference is what happens when you use tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. AI models performing useful outputs is called inference, compared to training, when AI models are being built. Any time you’re doing something useful with AI as an end user, you’re doing inference.
Here’s why Ironwood is a BIG deal. Almost all AI needs GPU (graphics processing unit) compute to do inference. 98% of that market is controlled by NVIDIA which has been supply-constrained for years due to demand. They literally can’t make chips fast enough to satisfy the demand from all the other big tech companies.
Ironwood frees Google from the NVIDIA near-monopoly – and as both consumer and manufacturer of the TPUs, they can scale to their own needs faster.
Huawei is following the same path with their Ascend chips. So is Apple to a lesser degree with their NPUs, Neural Processing Units (built into almost all iPhones, iPads, and Macs), and Amazon with its Graviton4 chips. Forward thinking companies are looking for ways to escape the NVIDIA monopoly to get enough compute power for AI – but Google has an infrastructure scale that few others have.
What does this mean for you and me? Those AI companies ambitious enough and equipped enough to be producing their own hardware will enjoy an advantage over those who don’t. They’ll develop newer, more capable models faster, and potentially offer lower costs, especially at the API level. As you think about your AI roadmap, take this into account.
