How to Get AI to Stop Generating Boring, Recycled Nonsense (The Red Ocean Trick That Actually Works)

If you don’t want AI to generate generic slop, then you have to establish what generic slop is first.

I’m working on a book cover for a book about AI and SEO/PPC and I prompted AI to come up with some concepts. I hated all of them. They were boring, bland, and literally exactly what you see on Amazon – clouds of data, bits and bytes, magnifying glasses, browsers.

Slop, all of it. But that was my fault for not defining guardrails, so I immediately followed up with a red ocean prompt. (For those unfamiliar, red ocean refers to waters that are fiercely competitive/crowded, whereas blue ocean refers to clear, empty waters)

I said: “Make me a list of the top 100 most trite business book cover images for a book about SEO or AI.” And the model didn’t even have to think very hard. Here were just a few:

  1. Glowing neural network nodes and connection lines
  2. Magnifying glass over data/code
  3. Robot or humanoid AI figure
  4. Brain with circuit patterns overlaid
  5. Ripple/wave emanating from a central point
  6. Lighthouse in dark water
  7. Murmuration of birds/data points
  8. Abstract DNA helix with digital elements
  9. Person at a keyboard with glowing holographic UI
  10. Network graph connecting people icons

You and I have seen a literal shelf full of these books, probably at the airport.

And I followed up with the blue ocean prompt: “Make 5 book cover concepts now that use NONE of these 100 tropes or similar/related themes”.

By knocking out all the high probability items up front, by defining what IS slop, it’s easier to force the model to go outside the boundaries of slop, and we ended up with something I rather liked.

Where we landed was someplace unexpected – a relatively common theme expressed as a 17th century Dutch-style painting. You’ll see it relatively soon.

If you don’t want AI to output slop, get it to spit out a lot of slop and then force it to exclude it.
