Today: BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
Tomorrow: BYOA (Bring Your Own Agents)
More and more people will be building their own agents to increase their personal productivity. And, they will take that “team” with them to their next job.
I can also imagine a day where companies will gravitate towards hiring people that have their own team of agents that help them create and deliver more value.

I love this take on the future of an employee who has their own agents, at least for the most technical employees. There is one additional angle that is worth pointing out here:
Intellectual property rights.
Years ago when I started working at a PR agency, one of the things that I negotiated up front was a separate employment contract than what other employees were using. Mine had specific carve outs for things like my blog and the Marketing Over Coffee podcast, exceptions that clearly stated the PR firm could not lay claim to any of that intellectual property.
When the firm later got acquired, the new owners were quite surprised that one of their employees had a wildly different employment agreement with a lot of intellectual property exceptions.
If you are bringing your own agents into an employer in the future, who owns those agents? Who owns their outputs? Who is responsible for the governance of them and where you might be sending company data?
If you are a technically advanced employee doing this sort of thing today, now is the best time to talk to a human lawyer and get real legal advice from them about how to structure your employment agreement so that you de-risk yourself and the company you’re working for.
The technology may be a new area, but intellectual property law is not. Work with a real lawyer today so that tomorrow you and your employer’s respective intellectual property is protected. Think ahead with the simple question, what could go wrong? What happens if a less ethical company acquires your current employer? What happens if you change jobs to a company that is far more aggressive towards employee IP rights?
