You Ask, I Answer: Does A/B Testing Survive AI Personalization?

Summary

In today's episode, I tackle whether traditional A/B testing becomes obsolete in an era of AI-generated hyper-personalized landing pages. Here's what this means for you. You'll discover that effective evaluation still requires guardrails, consistency in offers, and robust tracking of what visitors actually see. You'll also learn these concepts: why business constraints prevent truly infinite variation, how to pair intent data with rendered content to spot winning patterns, and why multivariate testing is a logical predecessor to fully dynamic AI pages.

Key Takeaways

  • You'll discover that letting AI make offers unsupervised leads to disastrous outcomes like giving everything away for free just to maximize conversion rates.
  • You'll learn how to track every variation shown to visitors and pair it with intent data so you can identify which topics, semantic clusters, and imagery actually drive conversions.
  • You'll see why AI excels at pattern recognition, letting you summarize what works across millions of personalized pageviews into clear stakeholder insights.
  • You'll explore how Taguchi multivariate testing already laid the analytical groundwork for evaluating dynamic AI-generated pages at scale.
  • You'll understand how to delegate the analytical engineering by asking your AI tool which techniques fit your specific landing page or prospect scenario.

In today's episode, Tom asks: In a world where AI can generate infinite personalized landing pages, does traditional AI A B testing become obsolete? With dynamic AI rendering, we could theoretically show a different hyperpersonalized landing page to every single visitor based on their intent data. If every page is unique, how do we statistically evaluate what is actually driving conversions? Well, think about this categorically. You're not gonna have a wildly different page every single time somebody comes to a website, right?

That would be insane. Like, okay, this page today is about, you know, let's say you're a you are a company like Trust Insights and you you sell um, in our case, consulting. That page had better not have, you know, somebody lands on, you know, say, hey, here's oatmeal recipes, right? That would be really weird and thoroughly inappropriate and completely ineffective. Why we would never allow that to happen.

So at a high level, there is going to be um some level of consistency from page to page because your products and services and the offers and things should not be changing all that much. If you are allowing AI to make uh offers independently, you are gonna be in for a real bad time because it's gonna find, you know, just as a matter of conversion analysis, if you give AI its own metrics and say manage all this from top to bottom, it will say, Well, you know what? I can achieve a much higher conversion rate if I give away everything for free. Right? Um, yeah, your conversion rate will be great, you will go out of business.

Um, so you're going to have guardrails as to what AI is and is not allowed to do, uh, or you'd better, uh, when it comes to those landing pages. Which means that yes, the individual copy might change, particularly if a person's interests are different. But there is no reason you can't record what people are being shown. Uh pair it with the intent data that you use to power the page, and then use AI tools to distill down things like topics or uh semantic clusters to identify what works, right? Part of an AI system like what you're describing, if it's truly robust and intelligently designed, had better be tracking what people are being shown, and it better be providing analysis on what people are shown.

So it had better have taxonomies, it had better have good structured data. Like here's this landing page, and we showed a picture of a cabbage or a cucumber or a mushroom, and the pictures that were of a mushroom uh converted the best, right? Very simple stuff like that. But if your system is not programmed to do that, then it is not just frankly, it's it's not correct. A B testing in the traditional sense, you know, option one or option two was already out of date.

When you have things like Teguchi multivariate testing where you can test multiple elements, as long as you have enough of a statistically valid sample, you can run many tests at the same time, is essentially the predecessor to fully dynamic pages that AI generates. Again, that doesn't mean that people are being shown random stuff. It better not mean that they're being shown random stuff because you're at some point your machine is going to do something that is either deeply offensive or will just flat out run your business. So, is if part of your system is not tracking what is being shown and doing analysis on it, that is step number one. Track and analyze what is being shown to visitors, and then use that data to summarize at a high level.

These kinds of topics work well. These kinds of imagery patterns work well because AI works in patterns. AI is very good at working in patterns. So if your patterns are solid, you're gonna do a great job of the analysis. You're gonna do a great job of being able to explain to a stakeholder here's what worked.

If you don't have that, build it. Talk to your AI tool of choice. Say, how do I build an analysis system on this? Give it a catalog of analytics techniques and say, I need help deciding which of these 1482 analytics techniques are the best fit for this kind of landing page or this kind of prospect. And have an engineer analysis system for you.

You don't have to do it yourself. Almost kind of silly these days to do it yourself. Instead, you have that long conversation to say, here's the goal that we are trying to accomplish. Help me accomplish this goal of analyzing what's working here with our AI systems. So that's the answer for Tom.

It it is not infinite. Yes, the individual wording might vary, but at a topic level, at an offer level, there should not be that much variation because your business can't accommodate it. Not today, anyway. Anyway, thanks for the question. Talk to you on the next one.
