Skip the Cloud AI Bills: How Chinese Open-Source Models Slash Enterprise LLM Costs

China strikes again.

Two big model releases this week – Minimax H3 (Hailuo), king-size video generator, which can run on a machine that can support 500 GB of VRAM. You won’t be running this on a MacBook any time soon, but big inference providers like DeepInfra will be able to serve this up and it’s a viable alternative to closed models like Gemini Omni.

But the big one is Alibaba Qwen 3.8 Max, which will be made open next week. This is a fifth-generation, Fable-class model at 2.4 trillion parameters (95B active), so like Hailuo 3, you won’t be running this on a MacBook, BUT if you hvae the hardware, you could have a Fable-class model that runs entirely on your own infrastructure.

If you’re a company tired of massive Anthropic bills and you have the hardware, you just got state of the art AI that’s yours forever.

This is why you hear broligarchs begging Washington to ban Chinese AI models – to use a Claudism, it’s not because they’re a threat to safety, it’s because they’re a threat to profits. Compare the costs per million tokens:

  • Claude Opus 4.8 (comparable to GLM-5.2): $5 in, $25/out
  • GLM-5.2 on DeepInfra (a US-based provider): $0.75 in, $2.40 out

It’s likely that big inference providers will be able to offer Fable-class performance at half the cost or less of Anthropic, and in the enterprise (which is where the money really is), buying an NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 at US$9 million and then having Fable AI for 25,000 – 30,000 users with no additional hardware or software costs (but a hefty electricity bill at 230 kW).

This now marks the third fifth-generation model from China that’s Opus 5/Fable Class – GLM-5.2 (which HuggingFace used to stop a runaway GPT-5.6), Kimi K3, and now Qwen 3.8 Max.

Your homework: do the math on what you’re paying closed-weights providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, and see based on those same usage levels what you’d pay to use an open weights model instead.
