Hero or Villain: How Positive Messaging Wins Audiences

Compare these two sets of messages.

Positive:
You belong
You are welcome here
You are one of us
You are not to blame
You are part of the solution
You are one of the good guys
You are an equal
You have a voice

Negative:
You do not belong here
You are not welcome here
You are not one of us
You are to blame
You are part of the problem
You are one of the bad guys
You are lesser
You do not have a voice

When we discuss things like radicalization, these are the two sets of messages that enable it. If your side – whatever your beliefs – is transmitting the negative messages, then don’t be surprised when people flock to the positive messages, even if the group or organization behind them is abhorrent. Wonder why a certain group is radicalized to a certain position? Check what the messaging is to them from the different perspectives. Who is telling them they are the hero of their story, and who is telling them they are the villain?

If you want to win or win back that audience, you have to figure out how to pivot your messaging from negative to positive.

I see very smart folks like Mark Horvath talking about this with regard to causes like homelessness and how the majority of NGO messaging is falling flat with audiences in part because they’re telling folks who aren’t homeless that they’re the problem, alienating a core set of supporters.

Tamsen Webster, MA, MBA talks about this a lot too – she says we all want to be seen as smart, capable, and good. Does your messaging say that, or does it tell your audience the opposite?

This is where AI tools are FANTASTIC. Give your AI tool of choice the lists above and ask it to reality check your own messaging. Are you being TRULY inclusive, or is some of your messaging excluding people – and is that your intent?
