Positive: You belong You are welcome here You are one of us You are not to blame You are part of the solution You are one of the good guys You are an equal You have a voice Negative: You do not belong here You are not welcome here You are not one of us You are to blame You are part of the problem You are one of the bad guys You are lesser You do not have a voice When we discuss things like radicalization, these are the two sets of messages that enable it. If your side - whatever your beliefs - is transmitting the negative messages, then don’t be surprised when people flock to the positive messages, even if the group or organization behind them is abhorrent. Wonder why a certain group is radicalized to a certain position? Check what the messaging is to them from the different perspectives. Who is telling them they are the hero of their story, and who is telling them they are the villain? If you want to win or win back that audience, you have to figure out how to pivot your messaging from negative to positive. I see very smart folks like Mark Horvath talking about this with regard to causes like homelessness and how the majority of NGO messaging is falling flat with audiences in part because they're telling folks who aren't homeless that they're the problem, alienating a core set of supporters. Tamsen Webster, MA, MBA talks about this a lot too - she says we all want to be seen as smart, capable, and good. Does your messaging say that, or does it tell your audience the opposite?
