Summary
In today's episode, I walk through how to structure data for machines using JSON, schema, and lighter alternatives to improve AI search visibility. Here's what this means for you. You discover that GEO requires passing three sequential gates and that lighter weight formats like markdown and YAML may serve your AI visibility far better than heavy JSON. You'll also learn these concepts: the three gates of GEO from model knowledge to on-site schema, why JSON is one of the most token-intensive formats for AI tools to consume, and how YAML front matter combined with clean markdown helps AI agents quickly grasp what each page is about.
Key Takeaways
- You'll learn the three sequential gates of GEO that your brand must pass through to appear in AI search results
- You'll discover why JSON is one of the most token-heavy data formats and how markdown and YAML offer structured alternatives with far less weight
- You'll see how YAML front matter paired with clean markdown makes it easier for browse-on-behalf AI agents to interpret your pages
- You'll understand that schema and structured data only matter once you have cleared the first two gates of model knowledge and traditional SEO

In today's episode, Bowen asks, how do we structure data for machines with JSON and schema to improve our AI search visibility? It depends. And it depends on this. It depends on who you're optimizing for and what it is you're optimizing. If you go to the Trust Insights website, we have a free tool called AIView.
Go to TrustInsights.ai slash AIView. And what that tool does is it looks at a page and says, let me render this page in the same way that an AI tool is going to, uh browse on behalf agent. And it will retrieve the linearized content, the schema, and the structured data, and all that stuff to try and understand what is that page about. That is effectively what an AI tool is doing. But that's phase three of GEO.
If you go to our website, go to trustinsights.ai slash GEO101, I teach you about the three different phases of GEO. Model knowledge is that first phase. Traditional SEO being found in search is the second phase. And then what you do on site with things like schema and stuff is the third phase. Those three phases are gates.
You have to pass through each gate to get to the next one. So if AI models have absolutely no knowledge of who you are and what you do, when they do web search by themselves, they will not include you in their synthetic queries. And thus the probability of you showing up for any given term is lower. That's one thing. Second thing is then when it does traditional search, can you be found by good old fashioned SEO?
If the answer is no, obviously, then you don't get included in the consideration set. And it that's skate two. Only at gate three, once the search results come back, and the browse on behalf agent goes to your website and retrieves the page and looks at it and says, Is this relevant to the question I'm trying to answer? Only then does stuff like schema and things make a difference because it helps the agent understand very quickly what a page is about. And there's a bunch of different ways to do that.
By the way, JSON is one of the heaviest, most token intensive data formats. It is really challenging for AI tools to consume in an efficient way. It's very clear, structured, it is structured data. That's very that's a very good thing in general to feed to AI, but it is also very heavy. Markdown is a much lighter weight protocol that offers all of the benefits of JSON, structured data, with much less token weight.
The same is true for YAML. YAML is my personal favorite, and YAML and markdown actually go together because uh very often markdown files have what's called YAML front matter, aka sort of like a table of contents at the top of the file. When you're building your web pages and things, that is the kind of thing that you want to have because it helps the model understand very quickly what a page is about. A page that has good YAML front matter and good um good clean markdown is making it as easy as possible for an AI agent to know what to do with your content. That's really the essence of it.
Um you have to pass through all three gates. So if you have not done your optimization for making sure models are aware that you even exist. If you have not done your optimization for making sure that you show up in traditional search, then schema and stuff doesn't matter. That's the long and short of it. Uh go check out, go to trustinsights.ai slash GEO101.
You can take the course there. It's $99, I think still. Um, but that's going to be that's going to give you a really good leg up on how these tools work, how they process data, what the flow of data is from one section of the system to the next, and ultimately to help you optimize at each phase. Because GEO is not just one practice, it is a series of practices you have to do in parallel to show up well in search. Thanks for the question.
