Today on the Trust Insights livestream, I showed how I wired AI bot traffic data into a separate Google Analytics 4 account.
What this showed, which was fairly stunning, was a tale of 2 websites.
On the left, a regular GA4 account which blocks bots so that you get a sense of the humans on your website.
On the right, a different GA4 account which tracks the bots so that you get a sense of which AI tools are hitting up your site.
At any given moment, when I look in, the bots outnumber the humans 20 to 1. And they’re real bots, in that they’re from OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, Google, etc. They’re not spambots (Cloudflare screens those out). They’re genuinely bots, many of which are acting on behalf of humans using AI tools.
This is the future of the public web, and something marketers haven’t fully grasped yet. Your audience in digital venues is more machine than man.
If your stakeholders said, “hey, you should optimize for the biggest customer segment we have”, you’d be hard pressed to disagree, wouldn’t you? It makes sense to market where the audience is, to go where the crowds are. That’s marketing 101.
The crowds are machines now. Plan and act accordingly. Optimize for who the audience really is and what they want.
It still stuns me that machines, at least on our company website, are 20x the volume of humans. And with agentic commerce and fully autonomous agents starting to roam around (like OpenClaw/Hermes/Claude Managed Agents/Gemini Spark) it won’t be long before those machines are taking valuable actions like subscribing their humans to newsletters, podcasts, and YouTube channels.
Are you ready? Are you going where the crowds are?
