AI generally doesn’t think out of domain.
There’s a technique in metacognition called lateral thinking, where you take a concept from one domain and you move it to another domain. For example, if you play World of Warcraft and you know how to win PvP at Arathi Basin, those same strategies and tactics can be adopted for competitive SEO (obviously with fewer battle axes).
By its very nature, AI is a probability engine. When we prompt it for something like marketing strategy or analytics help, it returns the highest probability tokens based on what we’ve asked it. And those high probability answers are likely good answers, but they’re not lateral answers. They won’t help you think different.
Here’s an example. Earlier today, I was doing some analysis of #GEO data for a client, and working with AI, it gave me some suggested analysis methods. I knew, from practical experience, that what it was suggesting was going to come up with an answer that wouldn’t be helpful. So I directed it to look outside the field of marketing using a catalog of over 1,000 analytics techniques that I maintain for Trust Insights, and it selected a technique originally from 1805 in astronomy to use instead of where it originally started.
It would not have done that under normal conditions because astronomy and marketing don’t often co-occur. They’re not in each others’ lexicon, and so AI models don’t first think to invoke one discipline to solve another – lateral thinking.
This is where you, the well-rounded person, the SME, the deep thinker, play a vital role. You know that a method for calculating orbital motions of planets can be applied to GEO/AI Visibility because you understand that even though the domains are different, the underlying problem is the same.
You think out of domain.
One of the greatest dangers of AI is that it persuades us to stop thinking so deeply, to stop using our unique perspective to guide it. Resist that temptation and instead re-engage your own mind to help AI think in ways it natively tends not to.
