The AI Hypocrisy: Why Secretive Use of Generative AI is Fueling Creator Backlash

Many more people are using AI than you thought.

This is the conclusion from the fan fiction kerfuffle of yesterday, when a Claude formatting tag was copied by authors unwittingly into their fan fiction published on Archive of Our Own (AO3).

Folks are hastily editing their stories, and in some cases, removing them from Archive.org (the Wayback machine) or even outright deleting their accounts after receiving substantial negative feedback from their audiences.

Why?

It turns out that they’ve both been very publicly anti-AI and yet surreptitiously using AI to write or edit their works. To use Claude’s favorite construction (it’s not this, it’s that), it’s not the use of AI here that’s the issue, but the hypocrisy.

You cannot loudly claim to be anti-AI and then use AI, any more than you can be anti-sex work and then be a top customer at brothels or anti-alcohol and a regular at Moe’s.

And it’s easy to understand why, in some cohorts, it’s super fashionable to be rabidly anti-AI, to proclaim that it’s made of stolen works (the irony is that fan fiction by its very nature is a flagrant violation of intellectual property rights in most cases), etc.

In one particular fandom, 7 out of 598 works (1.2%) had Claude tags in them (before the authors scrubbed them) but based on surprisal and perplexity metrics, 21.2% exhibit AI-like writing style based on a scan I did. Note that I’m clearly calling it AI-like because AI detectors have significant false positive rates – it’s possible to be flagged as AI-like in your writing without using it.

But it hints at substantially higher usage than people are willing to admit.

The more a community villainizes something, the greater the incentive to hide its use. This is why I advocate that people disclose the use of AI AND also that we as audiences respect those disclosures; otherwise, we push people to conceal it. That kicks the can down the road in terms of harm – instead of making people unhappy up front that a piece is AI, they’re more incensed (assuming they don’t like AI works) that they’ve been deceived.

Respect the audience that wants the choice whether to consume AI content or not.

Respect the creators that disclose the use of AI to make it possible to choose.
