Stop Guessing: How to Use AI to Distinguish Real KPIs from Vanity Metrics

Let’s talk vanity metrics for a moment.

Vanity metrics are what I call non-zero metrics. If they’re zero, you’re in deep ๐Ÿ’ฉ. Followers on social media? Sure, that’s not a business outcome, but if it’s zero, you’ve screwed up.

A million free users, 2 million free users, they generate the same revenue, but zero free users? You don’t have enough value to even get someone to use your thing for free.

Vanity metrics aren’t business outcomes. That’s the definition I go with. That doesn’t mean they don’t matter, they’re just not the finish line. But like a marathon, if you never make it past mile 6, there’s no point in insisting on measuring mile 26.

And the REALLY big danger is that a bunch of people who have no understanding of statistics can’t tell the difference between a vanity metric (no correlation to outcome) and a meaningful KPI.

They just parrot what they see on social media – “XYZ is a vanityt metric, you’re a loser if you’re keeping track of it” and similar comments, not knowing that unless you do regression analysis on YOUR data, you don’t know what is vanity and what isn’t.

Okay, but how do you test that? This is where you ask your AI tool of choice. You give it the big, big denormalized table of ALL your marketing metrics, and you have a conversation with your AI coding tool. You ask it to look at the data, have it ask you questions about the data, and think through which 3-5 regression methods make the most sense for the data, accounting for things like spurious correlations, collinearity, as well as measure of fit and confidence, backtesting for overfitting, etc. then have it write the code to process it, and get your answer. (and yes, you can just feed that entire paragraph into your AI of choice)

Never dismiss a metric without testing it, vanity or not.
