~50% staff layoff.
That’s not a typo. Jack Dorsey’s financial services company is pivoting to be AI-first, laying off, in his exact words: “from over 10,000 people to just under 6,000, which means that over 4,000 people are
being asked to leave or entering into consultation.”
It wasn’t because they were bleeding out. They’re at 20% margin for 2025. 24% year over year growth. So why?
In his words:
“Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company. We’re already seeing it internally. A significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better. And intelligence tool capabilities are compounding faster every week.”
“I don’t think we’re early to this realization. I think most companies are late. Within the next year, I believe the majority of companies will reach the same conclusion and make similar structural changes. I’d rather get there honestly and on our own terms than be forced into it reactively.”
I think this is broadly true for software companies. Boris Cherny, the lead for Claude Code, said that the software engineer as a job title may be extinct by end of year. People will still use their software engineering knowledge, but the act of physically typing out code? Gone.
Even at Trust Insights, a 4 person company, we see this. We’re shipping more and doing more for clients than ever before. We’re delivering better results, higher quality results for clients than ever before. We’ve built things in the last year that would have taken us YEARS to build in the pre-genAI era. Our CEO, Katie Robbert, has been using Claude Cowork like a team of consultants and generating results that make us all stop and say wow. She’s gotten more things off her plate in the last 60 days than she has in two years because she thinks, AI does.
We’re a 4 person company and it’s genuinely an open question whether there will ever be a 5th human employee. At the speed agentic AI is advancing, the answer is leaning towards no. We’re not firing anyone. We’re not laying off anyone. But with skillful use of agentic AI, we can act like a 40 person firm with an INCREASE in quality. And every AI advancement, every smarter model, every smarter harness increases those numbers.
I said earlier today to Bob Samuels that there has never been a better time to be an entrepreneur because with tools like Claude Code and Claude Cowork, every individual comes with an entire back office of AI agents – sales, marketing, HR, finance, operations, at genuinely decent levels of competency. Are they great? Will they win awards? No. Are they good enough to get the job done? Absolutely.
This is the future of work: the best machines piloted by the best people.
The open question for all of us is: are you the best?
