In the world of product market fit, there are three levels:
- Done for you: least work, most cost
- Done with you: 50/50 split on work, medium cost
- Done by you: most work, least cost
The analogy I often use:
- Done for you: dining out. None of the work, all of the cost
- Done with you: meal kits. Some of the work, some of the cost
- Done by you: recipes. All of the work, lowest possible cost
Here’s what EVERY business person in the knowledge work field needs to understand in 2026: AI dramatically changes the equation. It can deliver done for you at done by you costs.
Practical example: over the break, I looked at the prices I was paying for a few WordPress plugins and thought to myself: this is stupid. Why am I paying for subscriptions to tools that AI can build?
I built myself an all-in-one WordPress plugin that does sitemaps, schema, 404 monitornig, redirects, basic SEO, analytics, image compression, the works. I’ve got a few more things I want to add to it, but those are the major highlights. It replaces 5 different paid plugins. Technical support is a chat away with AI. And unlike the other commercial products, there’s no bloat, no additional ads, no upsells, no external dependencies on servers that might go down.
Done for you results.
Done by you costs.
If you sell knowledge products – reports, software, analyses, etc. – you had better have a value proposition that goes beyond “done for you” because AI provides that now very capably, when used by skilled practitioners (that’s the big asterisk, it still generates crap when the village idiot uses it). Done for you is no longer a defensible moat, because AI can do it for you.
