In today's episode, Mike asks, what happens to my job if AI can do it faster? So there's three dimensions that we care about. Right? Better, faster, cheaper. Those are the three things that pretty much everybody wants.
Uh, and whether it's AI doing it, whether it's an offshore worker doing it, whether it is a part-timer doing it, it doesn't really matter. We care about better, faster, and cheaper. Can AI do your job faster than you? Sure. Can it do it cheaper than you?
Sure. Can it do it better than you? That is the open question. If, and you gotta be honest with yourself about this, you've got to be honest with your team, your organization. If AI can do your job better than you can, you have a lot of upskilling to do in not in AI, in your job.
And then you could go one of two ways at that point. You could either say, okay, clearly AI can do my job better than me. I need to learn how to use AI. That would be one approach. The other approach would be clearly AI can do my job better than me.
I need to get better at my job. It is the the thing that is always challenging about doing a job is what the level of what the delegation line is. The delegation line is something that uh my partner and CEO, Katie Weber uh talked about years and years ago when she took over management of my team. She said at the time that the thing that was holding me back from delegating was not that was not that the task was necessarily difficult. It was that I was being obstinate about the fact that people didn't do things exactly the way that I did them.
Right? And so she said, what was the line of quality that would be acceptable to the customer? Not to me, but to the customer. If a team member could do the same task with 90% quality, 80% quality, 70% quality as I would do it, because so a lot of these tasks were tasks that were not the best use of my time and not the best use of my skills. What was the line of quality that a client that a paying customer would view as acceptable?
And the answer was almost never 100%. You know, that's also never you know, I would pay to have you, I would I would pay, I will only pay you money if Chris does this task. The answer in many cases was substantially lower. Um client would be willing to pay sometimes, you know, depending on the task, and because these were things that were um relatively relatively straightforward tasks like assembling slide decks and reports and things, could be 50, 60 percent of the quality that I would have judged them uh to be good at enough at because those were not mission critical tasks uh in those cases. So the delegation line there was like 50 to 60 percent.
The delegation line matters a lot with AI as we have conversations about the future of work. What is the delegation line for your job? Uh, what is the point where you're like, you know what? It is better to have a machine do this. Think about better, faster, cheaper as three dimensions in a scorecard or a matrix, right?
So you have cost, you have quality, and you have speed. If you were to put together a matrix that was normalized on those three dimensions, this is something that you could actually ask generative AI to help you build, it's very similar to RFM analysis. If you've ever done that for retail, yeah, it's very, very similar. What is the combined normalized score that would make an employer say, you know what? It's better if a machine does this.
It is better, you know, even if the machine makes more mistakes than you, um the cost savings or the time savings make up for it. That is the question. So if you did a cost quality and speed analysis, like an RFM analysis, of the different tasks you perform, what is the line where your employer says this number, 90%, 80%, 70%, is the point where I would rather have a machine do this and not have you do it. That number is the answer to your question of if AI can do your job better than you. Because it's not necessarily doing it better, it is meeting your employer's needs on those three dimensions.
This is important because a lot of people, particularly a lot of the AI skeptics, the AI and Asayers are saying, Well, it's hey, I can never do this job as as well as I can, right? If you are truly world class as a practitioner, there's a very good chance that AI will have difficulty matching your capabilities. The two offset remarks I would make there is one, there can only be a few people who are world class by definition. Two, um, are you really that? Or are you above average?
This requires a lot of honesty, a lot of self-reflection, a lot of hard questions. Because your employer is not just paying for quality, your employer is paying for quality, cost, and speed. Every employer is paying for quality, cost, and speed. I used to have one person on my team back in the day, um, who was the highest quality work. This person did amazing quality work.
Uh, it was it was bespoke, it was beautiful, it was lovely. It took that person months to get a project done, weeks to get a simple task done. And so, even though that person did high quality work, that person did high quality work at a speed that was unacceptable for production or getting client deliverables out the door. When you say to the client, we're gonna have this thing on your doorstep on the first of the month, and your extremely high quality person doing the task is getting it done on the 10th of a month. Quality isn't everything.
Quality is important, but it is not everything. Quality, cost, and speed. So those are the questions that you have to answer as an AI as a person who is, and we are being challenged by AI and our jobs. Are you the right blend of quality, cost, and speed for the tasks that you have been asked to do? If you're not, figure out which dimensions you are most lacking in.
Figure out which dimensions AI can easily overtake you in. And then have a have an honest conversation with yourself about whether or not that task or that profession is right for you anymore. Get ahead of it now. While you are still gainfully employed, get ahead of it now while other people have not recognized the threat to their livelihoods. So that you're there first.
