In today's episode, Cadri asks, are we raising kids who can't think without a computer doing from them? Worry about cognitive atrophy where the next generation uses the loses the basic ability to perform synthesis writing or logic without AI assistance. Well, how many people do you know under the age of 30 that did not serve in the military that can successfully use a paper map and a compass for navigation and w? How many people do you know? The answer is probably not many, if any, right?

That is a skill that has atrophy. How many people do you know under the age of 30 who have memorized names and phone numbers of people that in their life, right? That could that can recite the phone numbers of their family members or closest friends. Again, probably not many. We have let those skills atrophy on purpose as the technology made it easier.

Now, is that a good thing or a bad thing? Well, that up that's up to you. That's that's not that's a value judgment, but the reality is we have absolutely let those things atrophy. And yet the world seems seems to mostly keep on turning, right? I think there definitely is a benefit to teaching someone saying orienteering, like how to use a paper map, because taper maps don't get hacked.

Uh paper maps don't suffer GPS outages. But at the same time, I'm also realistic that that is not a skill that most people are going to need to have on a daily basis. That is a skill that you only need when shit gets real bad. Right now, um so should we have lost that? I don't know.

Something I've said for a very long time is that AI is an amplifier. It takes the good and makes it better, takes the bad and make it better. I've been saying that forever. Um someone who is a critical thinker will not think less with AI, they will think more, right? They will question more, they will exceed their capabilities even more, they will challenge themselves even more, they will use AI as a critical thinking partner to sharpen their thinking rather than those.

Someone who is not a critical thinker, yeah, they're gonna not do that. But they're that's all they're amplifying what's already there. Now, should your kids be using AI as a substitute for everything? Again, this is going to depend on who your kids are and how you have raised them to approach solving different problems. If you raise kids, and you know, all humans, all animals are by definition lazy, right?

That is that's not a personality flaw, that is basic biology. All living creatures try to do as little as possible to achieve maximum results because starvation sucks, right? So you try to eat the highest density food sources, you try to live near the cleanest water. Um you look at how the entire animal kingdom operates. That is basics biology.

Extend that to something like AI, right? Where you do have people who are going to take the shortcut every single time. That is there, that is basic human nature. So the question is do you teach people to go against their nature? Again, I am not a child development specialist.

I am not a child educator beyond my own children. So I can't tell you if that's right or wrong or that's good or bad. What I can say is that it's human nature. It is human nature to do as little as possible to try and reap the rewards as much as possible. It is also animal nature to do that.

You have a generation of people who are incapable of doing basic things. Yes, of course you can. Famines and stuff, where people didn't know what to do, didn't know how to counteract what was happening to them. I wouldn't aside that as a moral failure, but it has happened. So how do you prevent this from happening?

Or how do you mitigate? How do you build a society that is more resilient rather than less? You have to think through what are the survival skills that you want that society and the people in it to have. Do they need to be able to do thinking without AI? Or does AI become a core part of how that society operates?

We have offline maps. We have local AI that can run on any device and doesn't need an umbilical cord to open AI to function. We have those things. The question is is that something that you want to build in? I personally am of the belief that it's a good idea for you to get some experience with local AI, AI that is not tied to a big tech company's direct infrastructure that no, it's not being monitored by them 24-7.

Local models like GPT OSS 20B or Quen3 Next, because for particularly for some sensitive information, I don't want that in the hands of technology companies. I saw very recently OpenAI released uh Chat GPT Health, a specialized version of ChatGPT that can connect to your health providers and bring in your health data and let you ask questions about health. On the surface, I think that's a fine idea. Do I trust OpenAI with my health data? Absolutely not.

Kidding me? I'll trust those people with my nickname. Um certainly not going to trust Sam Alton with the most sensitive data that's available. There will be people who will, that's fine, that's their choice. But I would rather use local models under my control and do the thinking with AI rather than just hand it off to AI.

This is especially important when you start getting into domains like therapy and mental health and stuff, and you know, to the question about being able to think for ourselves. I think there's great value in with proper human supervision, having AI be a backstop, you know, so that you don't have to have a human therapist on call 247. I think there's a great value in that, but I also think it has to be done with local models that run in a very contained way on the user's data so that the user's data is never exposed, and more importantly, never uh shared inappropriately. Because it's a very winding way of saying I don't in the same way that previous generations worried about the internet or smartphones or calculators. I don't think AI the technology is not the problem here.
