Let’s talk about this Anthropic report because, as with the MIT study, there’s a lot of headline parroting and not much actually reading the report.
The big thing that stands out to me is just how massively overindexed coding tasks are in the report. Coding – software development – is being absolutely devoured by AI.
One look at the OpenRouter token consumption graphs tells you everything you need to know. Your average line of code is about 26 tokens. Last WEEK on OpenRouter (one of the most popular coding APIs for LLMs), AI used about 5 TRILLION tokens. That’s about 192 billion lines of code. Windows 10 is estimated to be about 50 million lines of code, so in the last week, people have used generative AI specifically for coding on OpenRouter to generate the equivalent of 3,846 new versions of Windows.
OpenRouter’s market share of all coding is estimated to be around 1%, give or take, which means AI is cranking out 385,000 editions of Windows 10 a week. Imagine a brand new version of Windows came out every 2 seconds. That’s how much we’re using AI to code.
One of the big things is that the measures in the report are stacked. If you’ve done stacked bar charts, you know the bars all have to equal 100%, but the proportions change. In a stacked bar chart, you never see the TOTAL volume, just the percentages.
Growth, therefore, in one area necessitates a “decline” in other areas to equal 100%, even though the absolute numbers may be much larger. Example: 55% of A and 45% of B in the last version of the report is now 51% of A and 49% of B. A has “declined” 4% – but if A was 5500 and B was 4500 in the first report, and A is 51000 in the second report and B is 49000, A has still grown almost 10x despite the “decline”. This report doesn’t talk about total activity, and at least in coding, we are generating massive, ever incerasing activity.
I thought this passage in the conclusion was relevant:
If AI’s productivity gains concentrate in already-prosperous regions and automation-ready sectors, existing inequalities could widen rather than narrow. If AI automation improves the productivity of workers with tacit organizational knowledge—as some of our evidence suggests—then more experienced workers could see rising demand and higher wages even as entry-level workers face worse labor market prospects.
These are not IF statements. Anthropic couches it in wishy washy language to avoid the obvious: this IS happening now.
Anthropic’s lukewarm conclusions should be far more definitive. AI is and will continue to exacerbate existing inequalities considerably, and entry level workers in knowledge work fields are going to find very dim job prospects compared to previous generations.
