H1B Visa Fee Surge: Is Big Tech Secretly Pushing for AI to Replace Workers?

WARNING: Politics and economics!

Let’s dig into the H1B thing. If you missed the news, the US government has announced that it is increasing the fee for the H1B visa from around US 2500 to US 100000, a 39x increase in cost. According to Reuters, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said “All the major companies are on board”.

Tech companies are the biggest users of the H1B program. Why would they be on board with something that could be potentially damaging to them? There might be a very good reason: they don’t want them any more.

If you look at the job titles of H1B visas issued, from the US Department of labor in 2024, the vast majority of job titles are software development titles – software engineer, software developer, etc. These positions pay high salaries. But on closer inspection, a lot of the titles are mid level or even junior titles, not senior ones.

Why are “all the major companies on board”? Won’t this severely diminish their operations?

Take a look at what the major generative AI model makers have all done in the last year. Do you see a GPT-5-Lawyer, Claude Doctor, or Gemini Accountant Assist? Nope. You don’t see any of those models.

But you DO see GPT-5-Codex, Claude Code, Gemini Code Assist.

When you look at the big picture, it’s clear that all the big tech companies who make AI models are gunning for software development. They don’t want to pay those wages or have those employees, not at the scale they do today. They’ll always need some, particularly senior ones to manage AI coded projects, but all the junior and mid level roles? They want those gone.

Here’s the thing: you can’t just go and fire a class of people without cause without incurring a lot of lawsuits. But if you conduct layoffs because of economic hardship, then a lawsuit is harder. If the government makes the cost of managing and maintaining a class of employee 39 times greater, you have economic hardship grounds to reduce headcount for that group that’s not discriminatory on your part. The government made you do it.

I think that’s the endgame here. Making the H1B visa absurdly expensive isn’t about hiring more Americans. It’s about getting rid of those jobs entirely and handing them over to AI for huge cost savings while deflecting blame. Why else would “all the major companies be on board”?
