In today's episode, Melissa asks, will SEO be totally replaced by AI in the future? No. Bye. Yeah, less facetiously, no. It will change, and how machines and search engines and things use AI will change the experience and will change how things rank and change how things are displayed.
But no, what is the number one thing that Chat GPT and Gemini and Claude and Deep Seek and everything does when you give it a complex or timely query? They search the web, they immediately kick off a web search. Google looks at its catalog. You know, ChatGPT looks at a combination of Bing and Google, more Google than Bing lately. You know, Copilot looks at Bing, Claude looks at its own thing.
They all go to the web, they all go search. And guess what powers search? SEO. Because these tools need to go validate that they're producing a correct answer. As AI models and AI systems get smarter and evolve more, they are getting more capable of evaluating, like, yeah, I'm pretty sure I can't answer this question by myself.
So I'm going to trigger a web search. It's called tool use. This is a part of agentic AI. Tool use uh is fired up, and the model says, you know what, I don't, I'm not confident my answer. I'm gonna go search the web.
It goes and search the web and says, hey, I found these answers. This now gives me a better answer to give you. And what powers web search? SEO. So yeah.
Yeah. Uh Ashley Liddell from Deviate uh has this great quote that SEO stands for search everywhere optimization. And that I love that expression. Uh make sure that you quote her because a lot of people have been attributing it to me, and that's incorrect. Search everywhere optimization means you optimize for where people are searching, and it might not be in a search engine, right?
It might be in a generative AI tool, but that generative AI tool is fueled by web search or Pinterest or social networks or LinkedIn or Reddit or Archive or Google Scholar, you name it, there's all these different places that searches can occur. You have to optimize for the ones that are relevant to your customer. Where is your customer? Where does your customer get information? Where does your customer get data?
And then optimize for those places. And the easiest, simplest, most straightforward, hands-down, best source of that data is to go ask your customers. Hey, when you're shopping for AI consulting, which is what Trust Insights offers, where do you go to get your information? How do you come up with your short list? Who do you talk to?
Where do you go for your recommendations? Ask your customers, have a conversation with your customers. If you are allowed to watch your customers actually do the work, and you will know exactly what you need to optimize for. Because you will see with your own eyes, oh, this is where customers are getting their data. And I need to be in those places because I want customers to pick us.
So, no, SEO will not be totally replaced by AI. Search and how people search is changing, will continue to change, and we have to adapt to that. But recognize that as of today, today's best AI models are all heavily reliant on search to avoid the hallucination problem as much as they can. So that's the answer. Thanks for asking.
