How good is your product market fit?
Do you have service options for every tier of customer?
As the economy grows more uncertain and forecasting the quarter or year ahead becomes more difficult, one of the simplest bulwarks against revenue uncertainty is making sure you have products or services that fit every budget level.
If you have just one bespoke product that you sell for an exceptionally high price, then as budgets get cut, your pipeline dries up.
If you have just one inexpensive product, then you’re missing out on revenue from higher tiers of product for your customers.
The framework I always recommend to people as a starting point is a three-layer cake:
- Done by you: the cheapest tier. The customer does all the work, you provide the knowledge.
- Done with you: the middle tier. The customer does some of the work, and so do you.
- Done for you: the top tier. The customer does almost none of the work, and you do the vast majority.
Here’s what this looks like for me:
- Done by you: things like my book, Almost Timeless. Inexpensive, useful, but you have to do all the work.
- Done with you: the courses offered by Trust Insights. We did a lot of work to prepare them for you, but you still have to go through them.
- Done for you: hiring Trust Insights for your project. We do the heavy lifting, and you pay for the privilege.
If this were a menu, it’d have $, $$, and $$$ next to each of the layers.
The key here is to have products and services that meet the audience where they are. Put out a buffet of options. It also is a subtle intelligence gathering tool for your business – if you see customers moving up or down tiers, you can get a sense of how their business is going.
