Another week, another Pareto distortion in AI.
Two new AI models came out on the scene this week, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next and zAI GLM-5.3-Flash. Both of these are Flash models, meaning that they’re smart but optimized for speed.
Both of them score higher on Artificial Analysis independent benchmarks than Claude Sonnet 5 and Opus 4.7. They’re both on par with Opus 4.8, the state of the art model from 4 months ago.
Both of them are dirt cheap. On dedicated desktop AI devices like an Asus GX10, NVIDIA DGX Spark, or a Tinybox, you can run them at full power, full speed, completely locally with no dependencies on third party providers and no fees besides the cost of electricity and the hardware.
If you use a cloud inference provider like OpenRouter or DeepInfra, you can get these models for pennies on the dollar compared to big tech providers. For example, OpenAI’s gpt-5.6-terra has a blended API cost of $14 per million tokens. GLM-5.3 has a blended cost of $0.65 per million tokens for the same capabilities and intelligence – a 95% cost reduction.
Name a single CFO that wants to spend 95% more on the same capabilities – especially when using a provider that offers Zero Data Retention (BETTER privacy than big tech providers which often have 30 day retention times as part of the standard Terms of Service for non-enterprise accounts).
These newest models are further proof, more every week, that state of the art AI doesn’t have to be expensive – and remember that these prices are computed on rack rate API costs, not at subsidized prices like in plans such as ChatGPT Pro, Claude Max, etc.
