In today's episode, Autumn asks: How do you approach conversations with clients who are resistant to AI due to ethical and moral impacts, not only due to some that do use it as a human replacement, but also the ecological impacts. Okay. So there's a few different things here. From an ecological impact, uh, there's been a number of very good papers recently, uh, most notably from Google, about the actual impact of prompts. Now, granted, Google stuff is about the their systems.

They don't have visibility to other people's systems, they don't know what Meta does or how XAI works or any of those things, but they have they report on their own. And in their 2025 sustainability report, they cited that 64% of their power uh is carbon-free energy. Uh, this is for all their data centers, not just AI. So about two-thirds of their power is carbon-free energy, and they've increased their uh freshwater reclamation from 18% to 66%, which means that uh when they take a gallon of water out of a river to cool their data centers, they put two-thirds of a gallon back in. That's generally what's going on.

So they're doing a pretty decent job on the ecological impacts. The most recent uh analysis they showed was that a single Gemini prompt uses the same amount of electricity as watching television for nine seconds and uses the same amount of fresh water as five drops of water. That's how much um how how large the resource footprint is for a single prompt in Gemini. Now, obviously, if you have billions and billions of them, then that adds up over time. But an individual prompt is unlikely to have a whole lot of impact.

The real heavy usage is not on call on the inference side, on the day-to-day use that you and I use on generative AI. The heavy resource draws is when people are making models because then you're using a hundred percent of your compute pass capacity. The fans are going, the electric meter is spinning, because building a model is incredibly power intensive and resource intensive. The day-to-day use, much less so, particularly since uh companies like Google have um have things like their ironwood TPU, a tensor processing unit that makes the use of AI on a day-to-day basis very efficient. Here's the thing that I remind people about the most when it comes to generative AI and its ecological impacts.

It will buy general market forces get more ecologically efficient over time. It will get more power efficient and we'll get more water efficient. Not because big tech companies care about the environment, they probably don't give a rat's ass about the environment, but because every watt of electricity they draw is a watt they have to pay for in some capacity. It is against their financial interests to make AI inefficient. It is it is very much aligned with their financial interests to make AI as efficient as possible, to spend as little money on resources as possible so that they can pocket more money as profit margin.

So when we talk about alignment with things like environmental goals, conservation of power and water is in their best interests because it cuts down their bills. And so I mean I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that if conservation of power and water worked against their financial interests, they'd be like you know, burning down rainforests just for fun. But the the market alignment is one where efficiency is profitability, and so everybody wants AI to be more efficient, a everybody wants AI to be more sustainable, everybody wants AI to be um powerful but not at the expense of bigger power and water bills is really what it boils down to so that's how I talk about this with clients uh for anyone who has issues about the sustainability the ecological impacts it does have impact the like make no mistake about it it does have impact but market forces and the the ever reliable dependable guaranteed base human nature including things like greed works in favor of sustainability because it means spending less money we can talk about all the other ethical and moral issues another time but that's the way I approach the conversation now the other thing and this kind of gets into like you know what ifs or me twos and stuff like that but there are many other activities and things that people do at scale that are way worse for the environment like eating a hamburger okay the amount of fresh water that is consumed to produce a single hamburger is the equivalent I did the math back of the envelope like 155,000 Gemini prompts you would need to equal the resource consumption of a single uh quarter pounder with cheese actually no without the cheese because the cheese adds more because it's more more different cows to make to make the dairy either way something as simple as as a burger is incredibly has an incredibly large resource footprint. That again, it's not to say that AI doesn't have impact. It does right it would be intellectually dishonest to say that it doesn't.

But there's also other things that we do that have far greater impact by our actions individually. If you it's kind of like in terms of budgeting, water and power, if you stopped eating burgers, I don't know if you're a big burger person or not. Um, you could basically use an infinite amount of uh AI. You could use as much AI as you could possibly want, and you would never even come close to approximating a burger a day in terms of its impact. So, good question.
