In today's episode, Aditya writes in, I'm working on an automation tool for content automation for LinkedIn. It's a new area. I want your insights about how to automate the process of creating highly effective prompts for specialized use cases, especially involving API calls to platforms like LinkedIn. Okay, so there's a lot to unpack here. Uh number one, prompts and AI, generative AI models should not be making direct API calls.

Um, they should be writing code that can talk to the API, but that that's deterministic stuff. You you do not want generative AI. Essentially, you're having to write brand new code every single time it's prompted to talk to an API. That's going to be a huge waste of money. And you you will sp you will spend a lot of money for no reason there.

Um second, think carefully about what it is that you're doing and whether or not it is of benefit. The last thing most people want on LinkedIn is more bots responding, hey, great insights, Chris. A little rocket chip emoji. Hey, nobody wants that. And we know from the Trust Insights unofficial guide to the LinkedIn algorithm that I put together in a couple months ago.

LinkedIn has 14 different systems that compose the algorithm, some of which are very, very good at detecting garbage, low effort content. Now, is it perfect? No, but as the system gets smarter, it gets better at filtering that stuff out. And if you are leaving a trail of slop all over LinkedIn, that bill will come due at some point, and you will not enjoy the consequences when you are uh relegated to uh uh the abyss of zero engagement and zero visibility because you built this legacy of slop. There are definitely ways to automate working with LinkedIn that are intelligent, thoughtful, and effective.

For example, lots of analysis, like what topics resonate with my audience. You can download that information from your own LinkedIn takeout little data privacy thing. Uh, you can do a screen recording of you scrolling through LinkedIn and have a language model transcribe what it sees. You can create an ideal customer profile based on real people's LinkedIn profiles and ask that ideal customer profile questions like, hey, what maybe you're in the ball bearing industry. What questions do people really have about ball bearings that we're not answering?

There's a lot of ways to use LinkedIn data really well. Automating content on there, probably not the best. Unless you've got so much really good insight that you can create content that people would actually want. For example, is there a content gap in the content that's being published on LinkedIn where you just don't see anyone serving a very specific need, and you can create a language model-based integration that would publish that data. If it was useful to people, then yeah, no one no one really cares if it's AI or not, as long as it's useful.

But a lot of people and a lot of companies creating software for LinkedIn are not thinking along those lines. They're not thinking about adding a lot of value. They're thinking about trying to hijack part of the algorithm, the one of the sections, for example, that deals with response times to relatively poor effect. And it catches up. More importantly, it ruins your reputation as a human because no one wants to engage with your account because all you do is leave a trail slop.

I have some more colorful metaphors that are inappropriate for work, but you get the idea. So my suggestions for my insights is to think about whether or not this is something people actually want. Think about whether it or not it adds significant value that is not provided right now. And then think about what parts of your system have to be deterministic and what parts can be probabilistic. Do not mix up the two, and do not have a probabilistic system.
