How Using AI Made Me Embrace Open Source and Ditch Expensive Subscriptions

The more I use AI the more open source I become
Everyone’s got a service to pay for

Look at the foundations.

People love the lumascapes of all the companies in a space, made most famous by Scott Brinker’s MarTech landscape. But when I look at the AI specific ones, I see something different: wrappers around core technologies that are in many cases free.

Here’s a simple example. There are a number of companies that offer real-time, private transcription on your computer. Open the app, talk at your computer, and it’ll paste what you just said into the current document.

Almost every company in this space is using a free, open-source model like OpenAI’s Whisper or NVIDIA’s Parakeet, putting a GUI around it – and charging a monthly fee for what really is a one-time download of a model.

To prove this out, I spent two hours on a Saturday night with Claude Clode and a product requirements document modeled on most of these companies’ features. I built SuperKeet, which now costs me nothing except the minor effort of maintaining it.

All those companies? They’re just wrappers. Yes, they make it easy to install. Yes, they make it effortless to maintain. But does any of that justify the 20 bucks a month subscription? Not to me. Not when I know the underlying technologies are free and available to everyone.

The key takeaway here is that so many of the AI companies in these lumascapes are really little more than wrappers built on someone else’s model. If you know what you’re doing with generative AI, especially with coding tools like Clawed Code, you can save yourself tremendous amounts of money and have software that will never go away and never be taken away by a vendor.

You don’t have to write a single line of code. The tools can do that. You do have to be able to ask good questions, think things through, and understand the strategy and tactics of the software development lifecycle. But once you’ve got those skills down, the sky is the limit.
