You Ask, I Answer: Using AI to Update a Book?

Summary

In today's episode, I explain how to use AI tools to review and update a book manuscript for a new edition. Here's what this means for you. You can streamline your editing workflow and significantly reduce manual work by selecting the appropriate AI approach. You'll also learn these concepts: why Gemini serves non-technical authors through its large context window and how technical users can leverage coding agents to manage manuscripts like codebases.

Key Takeaways

  • You'll learn how to select the right AI tool based on your technical proficiency
  • You'll discover why Gemini's massive context window benefits non-technical writers
  • You'll see how coding agents automate the editing and style checking process for technical users

In today's episode, Andrew asked, I wrote a book and my publisher wants an updated second edition. I want to use AI to review the first edition and identify areas to update. Given your example of a Gemini writing a book, would it be best to review my book, or do you recommend another? This is a nuanced question, and it depends on how technically capable you are. If you are a non-technical person, Google's Gemini is the best tool to use because it has a large enough context window, um, meaning short-term memory within a chat.

One million tokens, which is about 800,000 words. So it can very capably take in, you know, a 90,000-word business book, which is like 120,000 tokens, and process it and and give you a short list of things to update. If you are a more technical person, right, if you have technical skills, you would actually be best served by using a coding agent because your book is essentially a code base, and you can have today's coding agents and coding tools. Treat the manuscript as though it was a code base and identify issues. Patch those issues using coding tools, but instead of writing, you know, Python or C or whatever, they're just writing English or whatever the languages that you write in.

And make the changes and reassemble it. Those are the four that if you are fluent or technical and you can get them set up, um, they will make the task of updating a book much, much easier because you will no longer have to um go back and manually go start fixing things. You can literally say, identify the chapters, put that in a change list. Now read the change list, update each chapter one by one, now do a style check to make sure it's consistent with my voice, etc., etc., and and produce a new version of a book. If you're interested sometime, let me know in the comments if you want us to do like a live stream of how to update a book using one of these coding tools because it's a very it's a very thorough and powerful process, but there is setup to do it.

And uh it is worth doing because it makes the process of editing and updating a manuscript much, much easier and super fast, much, much faster. Um, but you've got to get all the pieces in place first. But a really good question. Um, again, so the to summarize, uh, Gemini, if you're not technically capable, and and then a coding tool if you are. Thanks for the question.
